The Database for Developers
About us
PlanetScale is a MySQL-compatible database that brings you scale, performance, and reliability — without sacrificing developer experience. With PlanetScale, you get the power of horizontal sharding, non-blocking schema changes, and many more powerful database features without the pain of implementing them. The database market is the most sought after in the VC space and is projected to be a $60 billion business by the end of 2022. The pace of innovation is mind-blowing. The opportunity is massive. Created by the people who built the infrastructure at YouTube, PayPal, Dropbox, and GitHub. PlanetScale is a series C start-up with over $100 million in funding raised; and backed by leading VC companies like a16z, SignalFire, Insight Partners, and Kleiner Perkins.

Most managed DBs (RDS/GCP) sit on network-attached storage (EBS/PD). Great for durability, but that extra hop shows up in tail latency. Local NVMe attached storage is different—lower latency, higher IOPS, steadier p95/p99—but historically a pain to run yourself. The longest downtime in my previous startup was due to running Postgres that way. We recently moved Supernova DB to PlanetScale Metal—a managed Postgres offering with local NVMe—and saw immediate wins: Read-heavy API latency: p50 334→92 ms (–72%) p90 500→170 ms (–66%) p99 single-query ≤ 5 ms and CPU <20% on 8 cores (from 16 cores ~40%) Big shout-out to the PlanetScale team for the hands-on support during and after migration. Now is the best time to migrate databases. Database is a super sticky product. Migrations can be extremely painful. If your business is growing, the easiest time to move is now—before it gets harder. Sam Lambert and his team at PlanetScale eat DBs for breakfast, lunch and dinner. PlanetScale serves thriving businesses like Whop and KICK. Facilitating difficult migrations is a part of their business. We know that because we helped Whop under Jack Sharkey lead to migrate to PlanetScale with 0 downtime with the dual-database setup: https://lnkd.in/dr8Hmbgj In the latest episode of Dev Propulsion Labs (Evil Martian podcast about the business of developer tools), we talk with Sam about surviving the us-east-1 apocalypse, 61,000% Vitess growth, what makes San Francisco special, and what it means to be "tier zero" infrastructure.

PlanetScale's fault tolerance relies on simple principles, processes, and architectures, but the real work is in the execution. These are the principles we follow to keep our systems reliable. https://lnkd.in/gfjQjvSb
