  • Congratulations to Migdalia Briones, a respiratory therapist (RT) at Presbyterian Hospital, who was recognized with this year’s The Phil Award®, a nationally recognized hospital-based recognition that honors outstanding therapists who provide exemplary care and treatment for patients with respiratory illnesses. The award shines the spotlight on the unsung heroes in the respiratory profession who understand that each breath matters. Candidates were nominated by patients, family members and other caregivers. Learn more about Migdalia and the life of an RT: Q: What drives your passion for practicing medicine as a respiratory therapist? A: What drives my passion is knowing I can make a difference for someone on their hardest day—whether it’s directly with them or by helping care for their loved one. My uncle passed away from alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver in 2017, and I’ll always remember the healthcare workers who treated him with love, respect and compassion toward our family. Healthcare isn’t about being a hero; it’s about showing up, doing what needs to be done and knowing that what you did mattered to that patient or family. At the end of the day, every patient is somebody’s loved one, no matter what path they took in life. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and humanity. Q: What is the number one question you are asked as a respiratory therapist? A: People always ask, “So what exactly does a respiratory therapist do?” I usually laugh and say, “We’re the ones making sure you can breathe.” My go-to joke is, “I’m glad you don’t know what an RT is.” Most people only find out who we are after living through one of the hardest days of their life—or watching their loved one go through it. You don’t realize how important breathing is until you or someone you love can’t do it anymore. That’s when people really understand what we do. Q: What personal strengths do you feel you bring to your current role? A: I think one of my biggest strengths is staying calm when things get intense. The ICU can get chaotic fast, but I’ve learned to keep my head clear and focus on what needs to be done. I’m also big on teamwork—helping others, jumping in where I’m needed, and keeping a positive vibe when things get heavy. I try to bring humor and light into the room, even if it’s just to help my coworkers take a breath between codes and chaos of every day. #RT #RespiratoryTherapy #RespiratoryTherapist #RespiratoryCareWeek

  • This past month, we celebrated the grand opening of the new Health Plan Place location on Pan American with more than 100 guests. The event was filled with community spirit, delicious local food and inspiring stories of transformation. Health Plan Place ambassadors, like David, gave tours and shared their journeys. Just a year ago, David faced health challenges, but with the support of nutrition classes at Health Plan Place, he is feeling back to normal. “Ashley’s classes and my friends at Health Plan Place got me through this year,” he shared, referring to nutrition program manager Ashely Dunworth. “This is powerful and life changing.” The new location was brought to life through the dedication of teams across Presbyterian. Jess Sanchez, director of Health Plan Place and Mobile Health, emphasized how every detail reflects a deep passion for serving New Mexicans: “Love is in the details. Health Plan Place is a space to connect with our members, patients and community more deeply.” Guests also enjoyed a flamenco performance from the National Institute of Flamenco, which will begin offering youth classes at the new site in December. A highlight of the morning was the dedication of two spaces. The kitchen—named Mrs. Van’s Kitchen—honors her warmth and tireless volunteer spirit. Her colorful portrait, soon to be a permanent mural from local artist Jodie Herrera, greets all who enter. The second dedicated space was the studio, named for Tony Hernandez, interim Presbyterian Health Plan president, whose vision and commitment helped make Medicare Advantage Clinics and Health Plan Place possible. A vinyl breakdancer logo on the studio floor pays tribute to Tony’s statewide championships and reflects the energy and leadership he has brought to Presbyterian and New Mexico. • ICYMI: In northern New Mexico, too many families have felt the devastating impact of substance use disorder (SUD). At Presbyterian Española Hospital, we see every day how hard it can be to find timely, compassionate care close to home. That’s why expanding our addiction medicine clinic matters so much. The expansion, which was funded through a Rural Health Care Delivery Fund grant, adds 11 exam rooms, more providers—including doctors specializing in addiction medicine—extended hours and same-day appointments to support nearly four times as many patients annually. Peer support specialists, who use their own lived experience to help others with SUD navigate their recovery, will continue to be a cornerstone in the clinic—ensuring patients receive the support they need from follow-up appointment coordination to medication access to additional recovery resources. The Santa Fe New Mexican recently featured the expansion as a major step forward for Española and surrounding communities.
