🎙️ At Press Forward, part of our mission is to be champions for local news, especially in rooms where reporters and editors can’t always be. In New Mexico, advocating for local news is at the heart of Rashad Mahmood's work as executive director of the New Mexico Local News Lab Fund, home to the state’s Press Forward chapter. The group’s advocacy takes many forms -  from conversations with legislators to meetings with community members.  It’s grassroots work, built one relationship at a time, and it’s making a difference. New Mexico has a growing, state-funded reporting fellowship program. And when federal funding cuts hit public broadcasting, the state Legislature stepped up, approving nearly $6 million in emergency support for public radio and TV stations across the state. I continue to have hope for local news organizations of all kinds - part of that hope comes from efforts like Press Forward and Press Forward Minnesota. Another part of that hope stems from the brilliance of local news leaders across the state, from Duluth to Austin to St. Cloud and everywhere in between. I also draw on the hope and belief that people will continue to realize the value and importance of local news in creating connection and understanding, in lifting up underrepresented voices, and in helping people come into their own agency and understanding (something the algorithm will never do, by the way). I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am honored to be leading this work at McKnight Foundation in partnership with many others. Thanks to Charles Blow and Press Forward for shining a light on the next chapter of local news and including The Current as a character. He's right: The decline of local news has weakened, even severed, connective tissue. It's been harmful, but it can be repaired. Across the country, there are hundreds of outlets just like The Current mending tears in their communities. So much of what've deployed in Lafayette, we've learned from them. We're not alone.
