🌎 Amazing things have happened since the launch of the UK’s first Verified Biodiversity Credit project… One year ago, South Downs National Park Authority - with the help of Earthly - launched the UK’s first #VBC project at the Iford Biodiversity Project Estate. This marked a major step toward measurable, finance-backed nature recovery through Biodiversity Net Gain (#BNG) and Voluntary Biodiversity Credits (#VBCs). Since then, we have seen the power of collaboration between #landowners, #conservation leaders, and #businesses who believe in funding nature directly. In just one year: 🌾 Native #habitats have been restored and reconnected across the landscape. 🐝 #Pollinators and bird populations are beginning to return. 🌍 #Businesses are turning investment into tangible biodiversity outcomes. This milestone is a moment to celebrate, but it’s also a reminder that there’s more to do. Restoring biodiversity at scale will take continued innovation, funding, and long-term commitment. A huge thank you to everyone making it happen: 💚 The team at the Iford Biodiversity Project, the pilot site for both BNG and VBCs. With, a special thank you to Ben Taylor for leading the way in on-the-ground #restoration. 💚 Nick Heasman and Sarah Westbrook from the South Downs for their incredible commitment to nature recovery across the park. 💚 The inspiring businesses - including King, Scott Logic, Rickshaw Travel, and Bellrock - who are championing Voluntary Biodiversity Credits and funding our biodiversity projects. 💚 And the Earthly co-founders, Oliver Bolton and Lorenzo Curci, for their vision to power biodiversity innovation in so many ways. Their belief in measurable, nature-positive impact has been instrumental in bringing this project and its progress to life. 🌎 "While working hard and taking lots of action to drive down our negative environmental impact on the one hand, we have to strike a balance on the other." We think #AmplifyGoods have the perfect attitude to reducing their footprint and balancing their impact through high-integrity solutions.
🌱 2022 to Net Zero 2030 – Part 2 🌱 We shared a post earlier this week about our commitment to Net Zero 2030, and some of the practical steps we've taken on the journey so far. They were things like choosing to be 'refill-first' from the outset. Building re-use into our business model with newspaper offcuts and repurposed cardboard. Reducing the material in our wall brackets. Reducing the distance between manufacturer and powder-coater. Designing every aspect of our product range with circularity at its heart. And using this thinking to drive the innovation behind our latest launch SUDZERØ. All of these actions have been conscious decisions - 'decisions for good' - made to minimise our footprint further and further. But to minimise a footprint, you first need to measure it. We measure our carbon emissions annually using Normative.io's carbon accounting tool, and they go up and down each year depending on our activity. In year one for example, they were quite low – we did very little trading in those first months. In year two, they were lower still while we negotiated important contracts. And in year three they went up dramatically – not because we started burning tyres to keep warm, but simply because we're a scaling business. More products mean more emissions. So, while working hard and taking lots of action to drive down our negative environmental impact on the one hand, we have to strike a balance on the other. We do this through carbon removal projects; we understand these are contentious, but we think they're still positive and we carefully seek out global initiatives that offer the greatest impact and efficacy. To date, through Earthly, we've supported peatland protection in Indonesian Borneo and the planting of 235 mangrove trees, which are likely to draw down 72t CO2e during their life and have a good chance of natural propagation and survival. A big part of how we reach Net Zero is through innovations like SUDZERØ - small, considered actions that challenge the status quo. Will you take action today and make the switch? 🌎 Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed annually since 1989, to raise global awareness of #disaster risk and the importance of reducing it. This year’s #IDRR theme, set by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), is: “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters” It is a call to action, urging governments, businesses, and communities to invest in disaster prevention, rather than facing the higher costs of response and recovery after disasters occur. Did you know that every dollar spent on disaster prevention can save up to $15 in recovery costs? At Earthly, we are helping to fill this gap by supporting nature-based projects that protect #ecosystems and strengthen communities, reducing the risks and impacts of disasters. Here are some of the ways our projects are making a difference around the world: 🌱 #Peatland protection - Rimba Raya, Indonesian Borneo: Preserves peatlands and provides solutions to prevent #wildfires, #flooding, and soil erosion while providing community training and early warning systems. 💚 Highland #restoration - Tigray, Ethiopia: Restores degraded highlands, boosts food security, and builds drought resilience through water conservation and native tree planting. 🌳 Native #woodland restoration - Sofala, Mozambique: Uses agroforestry and soil-saving techniques to manage water flow, mitigate flood risks, and reduce drought impacts. 🌊 #Mangrove restoration - Indus Delta, Pakistan: Restores mangroves that act as natural barriers against coastal hazards, reducing the impact of storms and flooding. 🌎 Air #travel makes up 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions and contributes around 4% to global warming. #CORSIA is striving to provide a framework for balancing unavoidable emissions. The question is: how can airlines do this with integrity and impact? Research shows that #naturebasedsolutions could deliver over 30% of the global emission reductions needed by 2030, while also restoring ecosystems and supporting communities. Here’s how airlines can use #NbS to create meaningful change: 🌳 Target in ecosystem restoration: Support NbS projects working with natural #carbon sinks like #mangroves, #forests, #grasslands and #peatlands that capture and store carbon while protecting #biodiversity. 💼 Offer passenger-linked offset options: Integrate NbS into #ticket purchases, #loyalty programs, and #corporate travel packages. 🌍 Diversify portfolios to maximise impact: Balance blue carbon, #reforestation, #agroforestry, habitat retoration and #regenerative land management projects for resilience and scalability. 🔮 Invest in Future Carbon Sourcing: Engage with #early-stage NbS projects to lock in lower prices, secure long-term supply, and shape project design to align with your sustainability goals. To make sure these efforts have a real, lasting impact, airlines should prioritise verified, science-backed projects that meet the International Civil Aviation Organization's standards, ensuring transparency, permanence, and measurable outcomes. This builds trust with passengers, regulators, and stakeholders while driving meaningful climate action. 🌎 #Indigenous communities around the world protect 80% of the planet's remaining biodiversity on their traditional #lands, which make up about a quarter of the Earth's total land surface. The #Ejido #community, through a project in Mexico, is doing just that, serving as the frontline guardians of our planet’s #ecosystems. They are leading a 46,000-hectare #forestmanagement project in the Yucatán Peninsula, focused on restoring forests and protecting #wildlife. This work empowers local people, blending traditional knowledge with innovative climate solutions to create lasting impact. So far: 🌳 #Carbon: The project has removed over 545,000 tCO2e in its first reporting periods. It is driving measurable carbon removal by combining sustainable harvesting with native reforestation, 🦋 #Biodiversity: It safeguards habitats for species like jaguar, ocelot, spider monkey, and tapir. It has also protected 143 tree species, all 100% native. It also strengthens biodiversity corridors connecting the Sian Ka’an and Calakmul reserves, supporting ecosystem connectivity and species survival. 🤝 #People: The iniative reinvests 20% of carbon revenues back into the local community, funding education, healthcare, disaster management and job creation. Project decisions are made transparently and equitably through community assemblies, ensuring local voices shape its direction and benefits are shared fairly. 🌍 What does it mean for your business to support the world’s largest blue carbon project? For decades, Pakistan’s Indus Delta has lost large areas of #mangroves to #deforestation, overgrazing, and unsustainable land use. This has left local #communities vulnerable to #flooding and led to biodiversity loss. The Delta Blue Carbon project was introduced to restore mangroves at scale, protect coastlines, and support the people who depend on them. With the help of Earthly, the project has made a huge impact so far, including: 🌱 Restoring 73,000 hectares of mangroves 🌍 Sequestering 127 million tonnes of CO2e over its lifetime 🦈 Protecting endangered species like the Indus River dolphin 👩🏽🤝👨🏾 Uplifting 43,000 local people with jobs, clean water, and education Supporting this project means your business is offsetting its carbon emissions while actively restoring ecosystems and supporting vulnerable communities. Going beyond carbon sets you apart as a climate leader and puts you ahead on the path to #netzero. 🌍 Forward-thinking #sustainable businesses are moving beyond simply #offsetting and carbon removals in their #climateaction and #netzero journey. They are recognising that protecting and restoring #nature is just as important, especially as over half of global GDP depends on nature. More organisations are taking action through Voluntary Biodiversity Credits - taking accountability with nature by directly funding ecosystem restoration. These credits deliver measurable #ecosystem #restoration through #habitat creation and #species recovery, with outcomes secured by 30-year legal protection and transparent monitoring. We have delved into the most common questions about VBCs, including: 🌱 Who can purchase biodiversity credits? 🌱 How many credits does a business need to buy? 🌱 How can a company measure its biodiversity impact? 🌱 How can a business benefit from investing in biodiversity credits? 🌱 What is the difference between biodiversity credits and carbon credits? Find the answers to these questions, and more, in our blog: https://lnkd.in/dVa3va32 #biodiversitycredits #vbc #voluntarybiodiversitycredits #naturebasedsolutions #climateaction #biodiversityaccounting #conservation #climatechange #investinnature #sustainablebusiness #sustainabilitystrategy #ESG #Earthly #projectEarthly
