🌎 Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed annually since 1989, to raise global awareness of #disaster risk and the importance of reducing it. This year’s #IDRR theme, set by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), is: “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters” It is a call to action, urging governments, businesses, and communities to invest in disaster prevention, rather than facing the higher costs of response and recovery after disasters occur. Did you know that every dollar spent on disaster prevention can save up to $15 in recovery costs? 🌎 #Indigenous communities around the world protect 80% of the planet's remaining biodiversity on their traditional #lands, which make up about a quarter of the Earth's total land surface. The #Ejido #community, through a project in Mexico, is doing just that, serving as the frontline guardians of our planet’s #ecosystems. They are leading a 46,000-hectare #forestmanagement project in the Yucatán Peninsula, focused on restoring forests and protecting #wildlife. This work empowers local people, blending traditional knowledge with innovative climate solutions to create lasting impact. So far: 🌳 #Carbon: The project has removed over 545,000 tCO2e in its first reporting periods. It is driving measurable carbon removal by combining sustainable harvesting with native reforestation, 🦋 #Biodiversity: It safeguards habitats for species like jaguar, ocelot, spider monkey, and tapir. It has also protected 143 tree species, all 100% native. It also strengthens biodiversity corridors connecting the Sian Ka’an and Calakmul reserves, supporting ecosystem connectivity and species survival. 🤝 #People: The iniative reinvests 20% of carbon revenues back into the local community, funding education, healthcare, disaster management and job creation. Project decisions are made transparently and equitably through community assemblies, ensuring local voices shape its direction and benefits are shared fairly. For decades, Pakistan’s Indus Delta has lost large areas of #mangroves to #deforestation, overgrazing, and unsustainable land use.
