During National School Counseling Week, we’re reflecting on the powerful discussions from our panel, "The Pivotal Role of Community Engagement in School Safety" at last year’s SXSW EDU. Featuring a diverse lineup of experts—including media, students, and safety specialists—the conversation underscored how building collaborative, multi-agency, and multi-disciplinary community teams is crucial to identifying early warning signs and shaping safer schools. School counselors bring an important perspective to this conversation. Stronger schools require stronger connections, especially when students move. Today at the Stronger Schools Summit at Lakeway Christian Schools, I had the privilege of moderating an incredible panel focused on one critical question: How do we better share information and coordinate support when students in crisis move between public and private schools? When safety planning, Behavioral Threat Assessment (BTA), and Student Risk Assessment (SRA) don’t transfer with the student, gaps can form — and those gaps can matter. This conversation brought together voices from: • Bristol City Schools • Johnson City Schools • Oak Hill School (OHS) • Private school leadership • An attorney who works closely with school systems on these exact issues Different systems, different rules — but the same goal: keeping students and school communities safe through better communication, collaboration, and continuity of care. If this is an issue you’re navigating in your district or school network, I recently wrote about why this matters and what practical steps schools can take to improve transitions: When Students Move, Safety Should Move With Them https://lnkd.in/e6r4A6yG I am grateful for today’s thoughtful dialogue and for leaders willing to tackle the hard, necessary conversations that lead to safer, more connected school communities. #SchoolSafety #BehavioralThreatAssessment #StudentRiskAssessment #ThreatAssessment #SafeSchools #K12Leadership #EducationLeaders #DistrictLeadership #SchoolAdministrators #WholeChild Kristie Coleman Kim Kirk Public Consulting Group Shane Ratliff, FPEM Chris W. School safety begins with prevention, belonging, and well-being. The Oregon Department of Education, in partnership with Willamette Education Service District and Public Consulting Group, has certified 13 School Safety and Prevention Specialists from across the state as trainers in the SK Cascade Behavioral Threat Assessment model. This work expands access to no-cost, research-based training that helps schools identify concerning behaviors early and respond through a whole-child, equity-centered approach. By bringing together educators, mental health providers, and law enforcement, the SK Cascade model supports fair, culturally responsive practices that focus on student growth and support, ultimately strengthening safety in schools, communities, and beyond.
