Advocacy can be intimidating, but our personal stories can help show policymakers how their decisions have a profound impact in our lives. In a blog shared last month by PHI's Berkeley Media Studies Group (BSMG), program associate Diana Guardado recounts her experience advocating for policy change at the state level and shares the strategies she used to tell a compelling story. One recommendation: make it personal. "Through my media advocacy training at BMSG, I’ve learned how stories can bring urgency and clarity to complex policy issues. So I shared mine," said Diana. When health payers and community development work together, they can transform access, opportunity, and health. A new factsheet from PHI's Build Healthy Places Network, "Mobilizing Community Investment for Health Payers" highlights how partnerships between health payers and community developers can help create the infrastructure communities need to thrive — investing upstream to improve health outcomes and advance equity for generations to come. One example: Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (eTOD) where investments in transportation, housing, and economic opportunity not only connect people to jobs, but also reduce healthcare costs, promote physical activity, and strengthen community resilience. Last month, PHI's Center for Immigrant and Refugee Health hosted a webinar with faith leaders to highlight how Islam, Christianity, and Judaism address trauma, foster a sense of belonging, and promote resilience. Viewers explored practical ways communities of faith can stand with refugees and asylum seekers through compassion and collaboration.
