What are quantum computers good for? When Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek built his first microscope in the 17th Century, he discovered that water was teeming with tiny life. He didn’t set out to revolutionise biology, he was simply curious. That same spirit drives today’s exploration of quantum computing. In a new video for our Quantum Talent platform, Professor Harry Buhrman draws this analogy to reflect on where we are with quantum computing today. Quantum computers aren’t just faster versions of classical machines, they approach computation in a completely different way. Like early scientists peering through new lenses, we’re now using quantum computers to “see” things that were previously beyond reach. Harry, who is Chief Scientist for Algorithms and Innovation at Quantinuum and a Professor at the University of Amsterdam, is interested in what we can do with a quantum computer that you cannot do with a classical computer. He introduces the concept of “queasy instances”; problems that make classical algorithms struggle but feel “quantum-easy” on a quantum computer. These are the frontier cases where real quantum advantage may emerge, from simulating superconducting materials to uncovering hidden structures in complex data.
