Unless an organization/person/family specifically requests products (clothes, food, meds, etc.), the single most impactful action you can take as an individual or a company is to make a monetary donation that allows relief organizations to source what they need locally and direct the funds where they are most needed. 💜 The human capital it takes to receive, sort, and distribute goods is complicated and time-consuming. 💛 Some orgs, particularly first responders like the LAFD, need their critical resources elsewhere. The LA Fire Department said "We GREATLY appreciate the tremendous outpouring of generosity BUT this is happening in our fire stations across the city and at the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. Trying to manage scores of donations impacts our critical operations. We have worked with local council districts and non-profit organizations to accept your donations and ensure they are provided to those most in need." 🧡 Unsolicited goods can also be detrimental for the environment. Nearly 60% of goods donated during a disaster end up unused in landfills. 💙 The outpouring of generosity and kindness is inspiring. LA, its people, its heritage, and its future need Us. The catastrophic destruction and devastation caused by the LA Wildfires is incomprehensible. Right now, immediate relief to help contain the fires and support the tens of thousands displaced is paramount. In the weeks, months, and years to come, sustained, community-based recovery efforts will be needed to revitalize and rebuild the LA community. If, like so many of us, you are feeling helpless watching this crisis unfold -consider supporting the work of one of the many high-impact, on-the-ground organizations addressing the myriad of issues the fires are causing. As someone who has spent much of their career working in and around public sector & nonprofit/mission oriented organizations, this is an effort that I'm proud to stand behind (literally, I'm in the video).
