Happy #WorldGeothermalDay! 🌎 ⚡ From magma to megawatts: take a closer look at Calpine's The Geysers, the world’s largest geothermal facility, and how an independent power producer is generating energy from a source miles below the Earth's surface. 🔥 When states open energy markets to competition, retail suppliers can invest, operate, and innovate at the pace the market demands without relying on captive ratepayers. The Geysers proves that private capital and smart market design can drive reliable energy growth for consumers and businesses alike. 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/e2syZ2R3

A new article by Joshua Antonini for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy makes the case for #EnergyChoice, using Michigan and its #energymarket as an example of what happens when consumers don't have access to other options. Antonini harks back to when Michigan consumers once were able to benefit from energy choice. “From 2002 to 2008, Michigan enjoyed electricity choice; purchasers of electricity were true customers, selecting from a variety of electricity generators in a comparatively free market. Prices in Michigan were lower during most of that period than prices in other states in the Great Lakes region, and in the country as a whole.” Now, Michigan consumers are on a wait list trying to be a part of the merely 10% of electric users –– mostly commercial and industrial consumers –– that can shop for their electricity. Competition works. 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/gUvmiUup

“Property taxes are going up, grocery bills are going up, and now they’re looking at a possible increase in their utility bills.” Indianapolis leaders are pushing back on AES’s proposed rate hike. 💪 When energy rates increase for businesses, consumers have no choice but to pay them. Small and large energy users in the Hoosier State are stuck paying whatever rates the utility gets approved. That's the unfortunate reality of a monopolized system. There are no alternatives. 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/eEwkbz2k

John Hanger's whitepaper, "Pennsylvania's Continued Success: Competition Maintains Low Electric Prices For All Residents," found that #EnergyChoice benefits all consumers. ⚡ Costs for everyday essentials have been climbing over the past 30 years. But what about electricity costs? Surprisingly, if Pennsylvanians took advantage of the state’s competitive energy market, they could be paying about the same for electricity in 2024 as they did in 1996. 💵 Dive into John Hanger's whitepaper to learn more 👇 https://lnkd.in/e5nNAcAs

#EnergyChoice is a solution rooted in competition, flexibility, and consumer empowerment. ⚡ 💪 • Price security: protecting consumers from price fluctuation with long-term, fixed-rate contracts. • Cost shielding: the ability for large energy users to shop for electricity helps shield ratepayers from utility costs for new power generation. • Value-added products: fixed-rate plans, renewable offers, or demand-response options flourish in open markets. • Bolstering grid resilience: diverse supply options reduce systemic stress from concentrated demand points.
