Rhea Space Activity was honored to host the UK Space Agency for a special happy hour at our Washington, DC headquarters. The evening brought together leading voices from the UK and US space communities for engaging conversations on the future of UK–US collaboration in space. We were pleased to welcome distinguished guests from the UK Space Agency, including Dr. Caroline Harper (Head of Space Science), Rob Sansbury (Science & Exploration Bilateral Program Lead), Professor Adam Amara (Chief Scientist), and Rob Decorte (International Relations Lead). We were also joined by Nicholas Mangold, Deputy Director for Space & Aerospace at the British Embassy, and Luke Stevens, Senior Policy Advisor with the UK Science & Technology Network. In addition to our UK colleagues, we were delighted to welcome representatives from across the space ecosystem, including NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Axiom Space, E2MC (Earth-to-Mars Capital), SpaceX, Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman, Starfish Space, Gravitics Inc, Voyager Technologies , Moog Inc., CisLunar Industries, Akira Technologies, Ganim Strategic, SEMPRE, Inc., The University of Texas at San Antonio, Interplanetary Chamber of Commerce Inc. 501(c)6, and Progressive Policy Institute, as well as members of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. With offices across all three AUKUS nations, Rhea Space Activity is proud to support and strengthen transatlantic collaboration in space science, national security, and advanced technology. Reimagining Navigation at the Edge of the World 🌍❄️ At Horizons of Change (horizonsofchange.org), we’re actively supporting sustainable, resilient solutions for the most extreme environments on Earth—solutions that will one day guide us through space. This March in Svalbard, we ran not one, but two cutting-edge navigation experiments, tackling the vulnerabilities of modern systems and testing pioneering alternatives in one of the planet’s harshest and most geopolitically significant locations. 🛰️ 1. LEO Satellite Navigation Experiment PI: David Marsh (in collab with The Ohio State University and The Wilson Center). Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)—like GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS—are the backbone of our economy, but they’re vulnerable to spoofing, jamming, and interference, especially at high latitudes. Termed “NorthStarlink”, this experiment used: - STARLINK & Eutelsat OneWeb LEO satellite signals - Software-defined radios, antennas, GPS, and a consumer Starlink terminal - Data collected while traversing Svalbard by sled 🎯 Goal: Compare experimental satellite navigation tracks with GPS control to assess LEO constellations as a resilient backup to GNSS, enhancing Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) in remote, high-risk environments. 🔭 2.JAMtarctic Exploration  PI: Nina Marić at Rhea Space Activity Say hello to Rhea Space Activity's (RSA) AutoNav powered system—an innovative celestial-based navigation system that offers precise, all-weather location capability without GPS. During this Svalbard expedition, Nina captured images of the sky in a variety of conditions (cloudy/clear, night /dusk/dawn) to: - Validate the AutoNav-powered celestial-based navigation system - Evaluate optical characteristics across wavelengths, weather, exposure time, and temperature - Analyze how visible celestial objects affect navigation performance 🎯  Goal: Data collection to validate that the AutoNav-powered system provides real-world precision for mission-critical operations in environments where GPS signals are unavailable—from polar regions to planetary surfaces. Both PI’s - David Marsh and Nina Marić have been most resilient, dedicated, tough and truly inspiring for pushing their own boundaries to complete their mission, in minus -36 C degrees and at times in winds of over 70 km/h !.
