During #NationalFirePreventionWeek, let's remember lithium-ion battery and waste fleet safety 🔥NFPA Lithium-ion batteries power everything from smartphones to scooters — but when tossed into household trash or recycling, they can become ticking time bombs. Fires sparked by these batteries are one of the fastest-growing hazards facing waste and recycling fleets today, putting drivers, facilities, and communities at risk. As former SWANA Executive Director David Biderman cautioned, “These fires threaten workers’ lives and operations at these facilities and undercut EPA’s ambitious National Recycling Strategy. We can’t recycle discarded items at a burnt-up materials recovery facility.” His words underscore the urgency of prevention — not just through better fire response, but through education, communication, and smarter collection practices. This Fire Prevention Week (Oct 5–11), we encourage waste and recycling organizations to use NFPA’s “Charge into Fire Safety™” campaign to spread awareness. Talk to your customers about proper battery disposal, remind crews to stay alert on their routes, and share tips on social media. “We’re using RouteSmart Online as a strategic tool — not just a routing tool.” — Gene Della Zoppa, CEO, Mill Valley Refuse Service After 119 years of serving Southern Marin County, Mill Valley Refuse found itself constrained by outdated systems. Routes had remained static for years, workloads were inconsistent, and overtime was climbing. Valuable capacity was being left on the table. The company knew it needed a change — not just new software, but a different approach to operations. That’s when RouteSmart Online came in. By modernizing its approach, Mill Valley reduced its recycling days from 45 to 35 and garbage days from 65 to 57. Overtime dropped by more than 20 percent. Productivity went up. Most importantly, the organization gained the flexibility to adapt — rebalancing routes to absorb retirements, testing automated vehicle adoption, and aligning operations more closely with community service goals. The result wasn’t just efficiency.
