Saab leaders in action! This week, Rome Ruiz, Head of Marketing and Sales for Saab, Inc.’s Surveillance Division, participated in a thought-provoking session with the U.S. Naval Institute, exploring how the Navy can rapidly build and scale a capable fleet of unmanned systems to meet evolving demands and solve key operational problems. At Saab, we are proud to see our leaders driving conversations that shape the future of defense innovation and maritime security.
What is needed to accelerate maritime unmanned systems for naval superiority? Here are the top takeaways that emerged from our recent panel led by Michael Stewart featuring Dr. John Phillips, Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD); Rylan Hamilton, Blue Water Autonomy; VADM Mike Connor, USN (Ret.), ThayerMahan, Inc.; Rome Ruiz, Saab; and Gregory Glaros, SYNEXXUS Inc. - Pace of Innovation – Faster timelines must be the industry standard. - Operational Problem First, Not Tech Push – Start with a relevant operational problem. Don’t start fielding things or have a tech push without a fleet pull. - Leverage AI & Data Partnerships – Regulate outcomes, not the innovation itself. - Build Resilient Comms & C2 — The Russian-Ukraine war shows exquisite systems struggle in contested environments. USVs can fill the gap, but only with robust C2 using LPI/LPD signals and mesh networks. - Reward Risk-Taking & Embrace Experimentation – Failure is the fastest way to learn. Reward the people who seek risk and try things that don’t work. - Leadership Alignment – Everyone needs to be on a wartime footing. 📅 Join us for the next event: The conversation continues on 15 October at Dominance through Disruption at the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center
