This month, and throughout the year, we honor the work of transgender communities to create a healthy society in which people of all identities are safe and celebrated! 🏳️⚧️ Unlearning gender expectations in our relationships means being empowered to: 🌟 Explore who we are beyond expectations 🌟 Pursue interests outside of our assigned roles 🌟 Develop goals regardless of social norms Gender expectations, roles, and norms build power and control and justify violence in relationships, particularly toward women and gender-diverse people. Addressing and dismantling gender expectations lays the foundation for equality and empowerment, two key elements of healthy relationships. Unlearning gender expectations in healthy relationships looks like: 🩵 Accepting all that makes us unique 🩷 Believing there are no limits to who we can be 🤍 Valuing diversity in gender identity & expression We encourage you to continue educating and empowering yourself by learning from those involved in gender equality movements and to be an ally in your communities! Happy Disability Pride Month! Join SAVE’s Community Education Team in discussing personal freedom as this month’s healthy relationship skill. Let this month’s post be a reminder that ending all forms of oppression is integral to ending intimate partner violence. Personal freedom is relevant not only to our interpersonal relationships but also to the broader goal of activists: for all survivors to live free from violence and oppression. Personal freedom is the ability to make our own choices, knowing that others will: ❤️Respect our choices 💛Support us in our choices 🤍Honor our autonomy to make decisions In the context of interpersonal relationships, the opposite of personal freedom is isolation. Isolation is a tactic used by people who cause harm that is integral to preventing the person experiencing harm from seeking support. This tactic may especially impact survivors with disabilities who may rely on others for additional support. Examples of personal freedom are: 🩵Spending time with others without a partner present 💚Maintaining a support network outside of an intimate relationship 🖤Deciding on what support from others looks like Both interpersonally and systemically, personal freedom is key to ensuring we build a network of trust and support with our friends, family members, partners, communities, and world.
