Today we remember George Floyd, who was brutally murdered five years ago this Sunday. Many of us also remember that in the months that followed, there was a flurry of new announcements from corporations and foundations all making new commitments to racial and social justice. And now the movement is in the opposite direction. As if racial justice has been solved. At SFF, we are standing by our values and doubling down on our commitment to racial equity. It was easy to be about this work when the wind was in our sails, and it is harder — but necessary — to continue when there is pressure to recede. — Fred Blackwell, CEO, SFF Read more https://ow.ly/CR8450VWKrj

Recently, GCC Associate Director Ricardo G. H., of the San Francisco Foundation, attended a powerful gathering organized by Colin Groth of StriveTogether and Richard Raya of Marin Promise Partnership to learn more about how the GCC-funded multisector collaborative can support the work of Marin Promise Neighborhood. The event featured County of Marin community partners, public sector and institutional leaders, as well as national guests, to share learning and foster connections to support cradle-to-college-to-career models of community development. It also explored how deepening collaborative efforts in places like the Canal neighborhood, Marin City, Novato, and West Marin can help communities in Marin County drive efforts toward "a future where every child has what they need to thrive." Speakers included leaders from the Harlem Children's Zone, StriveTogether, as well as community leader Aurelia Vargas of Voces del Canal; Omar Carrera, CEO of Canal Alliance; Sarah Hobson, ED of West Marin Fund; City of San Rafael Manager Cristine (Reid) Alilovich, San Rafael Mayor Kate Colin, and Supervisor Dennis Rodoni. GCC partners and colleagues were also in attendance, such as San Rafael Vice-Mayor Maika Llorens Gulati, Esmeralda Garcia, MBA, of the Multicultural Center of Marin, and Diana Benitez of Canal Alliance.

A report "Black Communities and the Bay Area's Housing Crisis" by the Bay Area Equity Atlas released early this month on Black homeownership in the Bay Area shows the region lost thousands of African American households after 2010. "These findings are more than just numbers. They represent the stories of thousands of people being forced out of their neighborhoods, cut off from community networks, and denied economic security," said co-author Ryan Fukumori. "This displacement threatens the Bay Area's social, economic, and cultural fabric." Read more via NBC Bay Area: https://ow.ly/TFXs50VS8OO

For this year’s Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we are spotlighting organizations that provide legal support for AAPI communities in the Bay Area. Asian Americans have a long and proud history of challenging inequities in the Bay Area. Today, as we face coordinated attempts to roll back the progress we’ve made, the work of the organizations in this guide is of paramount importance. Eric Flett, the regional president of wealth management firm MAI Capital, said he tells clients to reflect on what brings them joy: animals, music, education, art, health and welfare, to name a few. “A lot of us use all these great resources in the Bay Area without realizing that these are probably heavily funded by philanthropic organizations,” he said. So the next time you’re enjoying a hike or a play or a museum exhibit, think about looking into what groups support those endeavors. He recommended both the San Francisco Foundation (https://ow.ly/7hG250VQfUT) and the East Bay Community Foundation (https://ow.ly/a5R850VQfUU) as good places to look for charities that work in your communities.
