At the University of Maine in Orono, about two dozen Sargent employee-owners have been working this year to help lay the foundations for the new Green Engineering and Materials (GEM) building. Our crews have been part of the sitework for the new 50,000-square-foot building, a facility designed to support research, education, and advanced manufacturing. From deep excavation and utility installation to backfilling foundations and preparing for heavy structural loads, crews have been contributing to a project that will serve generations of UMaine students. Alongside the GEM work, crews are constructing the New Balance Track & Field and Soccer Complex, storm drain and utility upgrades for the Harold Alfond Sports Arena and Shawn Walsh Hockey Center, and the first phase of a campus-wide energy project. Managing multiple projects, winter conditions, and tight schedules required careful planning and teamwork—but the results will support UMaine’s mission for years to come, and we’re grateful for the opportunity! #UMaine #Infrastructure #EmployeeOwners #Construction #Sargent

An excerpt from the Summer 2025 Sargent On Track Magazine: “Our first core value, Investing In People, is an integral part of the Sargent Culture and helps to keep our flywheel spinning. Investing, however, has some powerful implications - the very definition implies putting something in with the expectation of getting something out. In the context of Sargent, it simply means that we are an organization that survives and thrives on Investing In People. Still, in turn, we have an obligation to invest in ourselves to ensure individual and collective success.” As Workforce Development Manager Peter Parizo writes, “time takes time.” Growth and leadership don’t happen overnight, but through patience, persistence, and the daily choices that reflect our Core Values. #InvestingInPeople #Leadership #EmployeeOwners #Construction #Sargent

Steve Renaud retired this year after 38 years with Sargent. Born and raised in Lewiston, he got his start as a laborer and pipe layer at W. E. Cloutier. Known for a “farmer’s work ethic,” Steve worked his way from the seat of a Case 580 to running excavators after H.E. Sargent acquired Cloutier in 1987, earning his CDL and building a reputation for steady execution. Teammates remember Steve as a thoughtful operator who set crews up for success and was relentless about moving earth efficiently. Career highlights for him included the Mars Hill wind project and Portland’s Back Cove North Storage Conduit. His advice to the next generation is simple: have a plan, listen to experienced hands, and avoid reinventing the wheel. He’s proud of the company’s progress and hopes younger employee-owners stay committed to the ESOP for the long term. In retirement, Steve, a registered Maine Guide, plans to spend time 4-wheeling and fishing with his son. Thank you, Steve, for your dedication and craftsmanship over nearly four decades. We wish you all the best in this next chapter. #retirement #welldeserved #legacy #construction #thankyou #sargent
