2025 Coalition Summit Last week, Save The Waves Coalition gathered our project partners, ambassadors, scientific advisors, field coordinators, World Surfing Reserve managers, supporters, and friends from around the world for the 2nd-ever Coalition Summit. Held at the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, CA, the Coalition Summit was an opportunity for our coalition to network and collaborate on ways to protect surf ecosystems. The summit was a great reminder that we do not do this work alone. Together, we can respond to challenging moments and pursue our collective vision to protect the places we love for future generations. The power of the Coalition is stronger than ever! Thank you to our supporters and sponsors! Schmidt Marine Technology Partners, Flotilla Foundation, Dream Inn, Rivian Foundation, Surf Industry Members Association (SIMA), O'Neill, Finisterre, Patagonia, Dryrobe Ltd, Saltyface, Sandbar Solar & Electric, Lumen Wines, Stifel Bank, Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Trees Wax, Ethos Santa Cruz, Richard Schmidt Surf School

WATCH NOW: “What is the value of a wave?” 🌊🌊 Save The Waves Coalition is excited to release our newest short film on our recent study examining Surfonomics, surf break vulnerability and access in Santa Cruz, California. Featuring our partners from Integral Consulting Inc. and Black Surf Santa Cruz! You can read more on the study and view full report today →http://bit.ly/469Jnud ~ Report Recap ~ 👉 Save The Waves is an organization that protects surf ecosystems 👉 Surfonomics is a research approach that determines the economic value of waves 👉 We combined this practice of Surfonomics with an analysis of how sea level rise will impact surf breaks 👉 This combined analysis shows that Santa Cruz will be economically impacted by sea level rise if we do not take adaptation measures to preserve these surf breaks today 👉 We believe our findings impact not just Santa Cruz, but all surf breaks and coastal communities in California, and urge statewide action to protect and value surf breaks up and down the coast. With support from California Ocean Protection Council Thank you Joel Hersch for directing this new film and for your ongoing support for our work.

Save The Waves is proud to release a new 90-page report on the economic contribution of Santa Cruz's iconic surf breaks. It is the first-ever integration of Surfonomics with sea level rise data to better understand what can be lost, economically, if surf breaks are disrupted due to climate change. Read our article here: http://bit.ly/469Jnud 👇 Our Top Takeaways👇 • Surfing has an estimated economic value of at least $194.7 million per year in Santa Cruz, CA • There are approximately 783,000 surf visits per year in Santa Cruz, CA • Without adaptation measures, all 31 Santa Cruz surf breaks will lose quality and surfable hours and many breaks will be lost completely • Sea level rise in Santa Cruz is projected to cause an estimated loss of $12.8 million in recreational economic value at one foot of SLR, with an additional $12.6 million at risk at two feet and a further $9.1 million at three feet • Access and economic barriers as well as psychological safety prevent marginalized communities from fully engaging in surfing in Santa Cruz and participating in the surfing economy The full report, Climate Vulnerability Of California’s Natural Surfing Capital, is now available to download: http://bit.ly/469Jnud Our team at Save The Waves are proud to have partnered with Integral Consulting Inc. and Black Surf Santa Cruz, with support from the California Ocean Protection Council, on this project. The world lost a great one this week. Rodrigo de la O Guerrero, Chile’s first Waterkeeper. He was known to friends and family as “Yoyo.” Rodrigo was what I sometimes called an “under-the-radar activist.” He was quiet, low key, methodical, and extremely hard working. He was always up early and working late and he spoke with a tremor in his voice when he got tired. But I heard that tremor as a sign of commitment, not a weakness. In 2008 with the support of Save The Waves Coalition, FIMA NGO and Waterkeeper Alliance, I recruited Yoyo to launch the Maule Itata Coastkeeper. This was Chile’s first member of the Waterkeeper Alliance. At the time we had high hopes for Yoyo's work — but never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed that he would still be deep in it, advocating for his beloved coastline as a water protector and a community organizer, for over 17 years! When we first asked him if he knew anyone who wanted to be a Waterkeeper, Rodrigo answered, "Me! I want to be a Waterkeeper. Here I am." Rodrigo weathered a lot of criticism from big corporations and government agencies who were constantly seeking economic development at any cost in Chile’s powerful mining, energy, fishing, real estate, and forestry industries — and he often worked for free as the Coastkeeper when the grants and funding were delayed or didn’t come through. Yoyo was beloved by the local fishermen, community leaders, and farmers of the region and he was resented by the previously-mentioned big business interests. This says everything you need to know about him and his priorities. Among his many accomplishments, Rodrigo fought for years against the Los Robles coal-fired power plant that was to be built on a remote beach nearby. He was an instrumental and unifying force in the local grassroots campaigns that eventually defeated the coal plant in 2015. In 2010 after the massive earthquake and tsunamis that devastated Curanipe and much of coastal Chile, together we traveled the coast and acted as facilitators for a team of first-responders who had flown in from California. We went through a war together. True to the Spanish saying, "mi casa es su casa", you could drop in at any hour and ask for anything. His community and his family were devastated from the disaster, and yet he was a pillar of support. In 2020, Yoyo was sued by a real estate developer who was trying to build an illegal beachfront subdivision. The company’s goal was simply to silence his voice as an environmental advocate and a water protector. The case was thrown out and the court ordered the company to pay all of Yoyo’s legal fees. I last spoke with Rodrigo in January. We marveled at how the years had flown by and we lamented how social media had somehow allowed us to drift apart. I asked him how it was going with the constant battles to protect his local waters and coastline. His response was: “I’m still here. I’m still watching. Let me know if you need anything.” ¡Viva Rodrigo! Un abrazo fuerte.
