We're seeking a #veteran for our Security & Public Safety Analyst - Veteran Fellowship, apply here: https://bit.ly/4pETa1W
But first, meet Nick Cruz, one of our current veteran fellows with our Arts Department.
"Hi everyone! I'm Nick — a San Diego native and a 20-year United States Air Force veteran. As the Arts Program Coordinator at SAN, I help bring live music and culture into our terminals, creating moments of connection and calm for travelers from around the world. As a vet, I'm proud to continue serving the public, albeit in a new way — by fostering community, creativity, and a sense of place for everyone who passes through. It's amazing to see how music and art can turn a busy airport into something more human and uplifting."
-How do you think your military background has influenced you?
"My time in the Air Force taught me the value of teamwork, adaptability, and purpose — lessons that continue to shape how I approach my work every day. This mindset carries over naturally into the arts, where collaboration and shared vision are at the heart of everything we do."
-Can you tell me what your experience was like in the Air Force?
"My time in the Air Force was incredibly rewarding. I had the opportunity to travel, lead teams, and work alongside some of the most selfless people I’ve ever met. I joined knowing absolutely nothing about working on fighter jets, but I left as a subject matter expert in the field. Not many people can say they’ve worked on fighter jets (or flown in one!), but I can. It’s a chapter of my life that I’m deeply proud of and one that continues to guide me in this next stage of my career."
