What if the next great chapter of watchmaking was written in Detroit? Earlier this month, we placed a full-page ad in The New York Times with a bold invitation: for Swiss watchmakers to partner with us here in Detroit. Not as a transplant. As a collaboration. The challenge is real. With new tariffs reshaping the industry, global watchmakers are rethinking how and where they build. Our proposal is simple: combine Swiss precision with Detroit grit. Build smarter supply chains. Train the next generation of watchmakers. Create limited editions that fuse technical mastery with American craft. This isn’t about replacing tradition. It’s about reimagining what’s possible - positioning Detroit not just as a city of talented makers, but as a global watchmaking hub. Thank you Bloomberg for highlighting this moment. We’re excited by the response so far, and by what comes next. Each September, Detroit Month of Design celebrates the creative talent that defines our city. For us at Shinola, it’s a reminder of why we’re proud to call Detroit home - and why design is at the heart of everything we do. As this year’s celebration comes to a close, we’re grateful for the chance to partner with artist KaceyKal, who transformed our Woodward store windows with his bold interpretation of the Detrola art dial. His work brought a burst of color and energy to downtown Detroit, and we were honored to showcase it throughout the month. When I first joined Shinola, I had the privilege of touring our watch factory in Detroit. It was a powerful experience seeing firsthand the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into every timepiece. I realized then: While I can't bring everyone to Detroit, through content, I can bring the factory to everyone. That led to the creation of The Movement—the first-ever watchmaking interview series, powered by Shinola. It's more than just a show; it's a platform that blends culture, craftsmanship, and conversation. Through this series, we've connected with audiences and showcased the heart of our brand: the factory and the people behind the craft. Since launching, we've amassed: - 18M+ impressions - 1M+ views - 4.5K+ hours of watch time All achieved organically. But the real win? We’ve created a platform that educates AND entertains. That taps into culture while shining a light on Shinola’s biggest differentiator, our factory and the people behind the craft. This is what I believe the future of brand-building looks like: Content that informs. Storytelling that connects. Marketing that moves culture. It's about authenticity, purpose, and building meaningful relationships with your audience. #TheMovement #Shinola #ContentMarketing #Storytelling #CulturalMarketing #MadeInDetroit

What happens when you spend 2 years chasing a feeling? This wasn’t just another collaboration or about designing a beautiful watch. It was about translating a legacy. J Dilla didn’t just make music, he bent time. So this moment had to do the same. From Detroit, for Detroit. The fastest sell-out in Shinola history, but this one was never about speed. It was about intention. About making something that felt earned. I pushed. I fought. I obsessed. Because doing it well enough would’ve been a disservice. I didn’t just want it to exist, I needed it to matter. We took our time and did it the right way. I’m still letting it all sink in.

Introducing Shinola's 2025 Great American, James Dewitt Yancey, better known as J Dilla. This release is the latest addition to Shinola’s Great American series, honoring American icons who have shaped, influenced and changed American culture. When I started at Shinola in 2023 I wanted to rethink what the Great American Series could be. J Dilla instantly came to me as someone who deserves to be honored. He's a true visionary who shaped the sound of a generation and changed music forever—and he’s a son of Detroit. To commemorate the launch, we partnered with Detroit native and multi-platinum superstar Big Sean to announce the release. I wanted to tell this story through Sean’s lens, as someone who was directly impacted and inspired by Dilla and his work. By doing so, we're bringing together the craftsmanship of an iconic Detroit brand with the true essence of Detroit culture. I’m beyond excited to release this watch and continue to honor J Dilla’s legacy. To me this is a perfect moment, where brand meets product meets culture meets impact. A huge thank you to Eothen Alapatt, The James Dewitt Yancey Estate, J Dilla's daughters: Ty’Monae Whitlow & Ja’Mya Yancey, Felicia Alston, Laura Mae Sorio, Roc Nation, Vitto, and the whole entire Shinola team for believing in this project and playing a role in making this moment a reality. The watch comes out next month but you can sign-up at the landing page (www.shinola.com/jdilla), to be the first to know when this limited-edition timepiece is unveiled.
