We hear a lot about #circularity and a circular economy, but what does that really mean? The wordy definition is "a closed-loop usage model in which recycled materials are remanufactured into the same kind of product from which they were derived." The short version? It means reducing waste. Plastic waste leads to #plasticpollution, which happens in a linear economy and causes environmental damage and economic waste. Here's a perfect example: a PET plastic bottle (look for the 1 inside the △) is fully recyclable, and a new bottle can be made with up to 100% recycled PET. And when a new PET plastic bottle is made out of recycled bottles, not only is the carbon footprint lower, but these bottles are kept out of landfills and waterways. That circularity means while your PET bottle may be single SERVE, it is never single USE. With the signing of SB 901, Maryland becomes the 6th state in the U.S. to enact a packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law - joining a growing movement toward smarter, more sustainable waste systems. Maryland’s EPR law shifts responsibility for packaging waste to producers, and is designed to… ✅ Enhance existing recycling infrastructure ✅ Reduce the financial burden of residents ✅ Incentivize sustainable packaging materials and design ✅ Expand resident awareness and make it easier to know how and what to recycle 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, which is following the movement of more harmonized EPR laws across states, continuing a trend after Minnesota’s enactment of EPR last year. The bill requires clear, measurable performance goals for recycling, reuse, composting, PCR content, and emissions reduction, to be set following a robust needs assessment and achieved within five years.
