Wow, it's been a wild first year since we released the beta of Sluice Version 1 to the world just 12 months ago! We have a long way to go and many things to improve - but the response to our first release has been more than we've hoped for. We now count 20+ groups from around the world as early partners. Some highlights over our first 12 months deploying the patented Sluice System in 7 countries! - We are now well over 1,000 users who have used Sluice AI to help them create more than 30,000 need statements. - 5 multinational companies in the top 20 MedTech companies in the world (Soon to be 7 of the top 20!) are already using Sluice to power their Needs-Driven Innovation teams. This week, I attended the Needs Driven Innovation Biodesign Workshop at the Texas A&M Engineering Medicine (EnMed) Campus. Rush Bartlett provided insight into what it takes to cultivate and develop innovative healthcare solutions. As the only undergraduate student in the room, it was a privilege to learn alongside doctors and other highly educated healthcare and engineering professionals. I found that we each brought unique qualities and perspectives to the team, which strengthened our idea-generating process. Overall, I had such a wonderful experience. This weekend, Ochsner Health hosted a Biodesign Innovation Workshop focused on training leaders from across the system in the needs-driven innovation process. Participants from clinical, product, research, innovation, and operational teams came together to learn and apply a structured approach to identifying unmet clinical needs, evaluating those needs, generating potential solutions, and selecting concepts to pursue. The goal was to build a foundation for developing innovations that can improve care delivery and access while reducing provider burden. On Day 1, teams focused on need identification, validation, and evaluation. On Day 2, they generated solution concepts, assessed them against defined criteria, and selected a handful to prototype. The workshop culminated in presentations to a group that included internal leaders, who provided valuable feedback and insights. Ochsner Ventures was proud to take part in this collaborative and energizing session. The more my lab dissects large language models, the more I realize we have no unifying theory on how these models will behave. We study them like zoologists - poking and prodding and observing. Most of the models are complete black boxes - we don’t know how they were trained, on what data, or what the weights are. When they get “updated”, there’s no way to predict changes in behavior other than using benchmarks. When we did our red teaming event, we expected newer models would outperform older models, but on specific questions, that wasn’t always the case.
