It's #WorldMentalHealthDay and we know that social prescribing can play an important role in helping healthcare professionals address the mental health care needs of all of their patients, of all ages and backgrounds. Along these lines and keeping with our theme this week on the tremendous energy in the arts and health world, we are pleased to point to another new resource for the social prescribing field. It's Perspectives on Arts in Health Journal, a new effort that is a collaboration by our friends at UF Center for Arts in Medicine, the International Arts + Mind Lab at The Johns Hopkins University and Stanford Arts. This new open-access journal provides an online platform to share research, practice, and diverse voices shaping this evolving field. We are excited to track this new journal, particularly for its arts and mental health content! https://lnkd.in/gkiw9rar

The world of arts and health is having a serious moment in the New York City area this Fall, with significant conferences and gatherings featuring many key leaders, friends and colleagues in the field from both the U.S. and around the World, along with great announcements like this from our friends at NYC Health + Hospitals. This new effort to pilot social prescribing in a program that integrates arts and culture in the Bronx with psychiatric care treatments is definitely something to follow in the coming months as more organizations seek to test and evaluate new models for our field. https://lnkd.in/esp8X68T

Around the U.S., citizens are learning about social prescribing through articles and editorials like this in the Naples Daily News which advocates for integrating arts, including museum visits to institutions like Sarasota, Florida's The Ringling, into medical care. We encourage advocates to localize their advocacy with pieces like this in local papers to continue to build momentum for the field!

Here in the U.S., we continue to be inspired to pursue our mission in this country by watching and celebrating the progress in spreading social prescribing in other countries, particularly England. This new article, the second big piece in Euronews in the past few months, looks at new data on the field in the U.K. Our hope is that the U.S. sees similar growth in social prescribing in the coming years! https://lnkd.in/g5XnHsna

So great to see this from Americans for the Arts! Arts prescribing continues to lead the way for social prescribing in the U.S.!
Research demonstrates how participating in the arts benefits our mental health: ▶️ Clinical research shows 45 minutes of artistic activity reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) by 25% ▶️ 60% of Americans report arts help them cope during mental or emotional distress ▶️ 69% experience arts as an elevating force beyond everyday experiences These findings aren’t just statistics—they’re evidence of arts’ vital role in public health strategy. As organizations increasingly focus on employee wellbeing, arts programming emerges as a proven tool for stress reduction and emotional resilience. But this mental health infrastructure is under threat as Congress debates funding: ▶️ House proposes 35% cuts to NEA and NEH ▶️ Senate proposes maintaining current levels ▶️ Final decisions still ahead as bills move through negotiations Whether you’re painting, dancing, singing, writing, or drawing…you’re actually practicing self-care! Mental health matters, and art is a powerful tool for wellbeing. 👉 Take action: Protect arts funding nationwide at https://bit.ly/3GBG8Bt #ProtectTheNEA

Social Prescribing USA and several of our key colleagues are pleased to be participating in “Creative Care: Reimagining Well-being Through Social Prescribing” - a groundbreaking virtual summit taking place September 22-26, 2025. As we constantly promote, social prescribing offers an evidence-based approach to wellness that extends beyond traditional clinical interventions. Our friend, Dr. Clarissa Castillo-Ramsey, has assembled an impressive lineup of healthcare professionals, researchers, creatives, and community health advocates who are successfully implementing social prescribing in diverse settings. Key topics include: • Understanding the evidence base for social prescribing • Practical implementation in healthcare settings • Creative expression as therapeutic intervention • Movement and embodiment approaches • Community connection as medicine • Scaling social prescribing programs This is particularly relevant for: → Healthcare providers seeking holistic patient care approaches → Wellness program administrators → Public health professionals → Healthcare innovation leaders → Community health organizations The summit is FREE to attend, making these insights accessible to practitioners regardless of budget constraints. Go Blue! We are so excited to see this new arts and health initiative at the University of Michigan. One of the key elements of this effort is a pilot study that integrates a well-designed arts prescribing modality that includes a research-proven screening process, wellness coaches and connections with arts experiences as health interventions. We look forward to sharing information on this important project as it develops! https://lnkd.in/eKuQ6iG4

What a great way to end the Summer (or at least traditional Summer in the U.S.). This piece from KPBS focuses on the expansion of Art Pharmacy into San Diego, an exciting development for the field (and for all of our staff in California!) The article discusses the development of the social prescribing field in the U.K. and how arts prescribing is now being taken seriously in the U.S. Very exciting! https://lnkd.in/gtJJgMs8
