AI is discussed everywhere — and yes, at Soul Equity, we leverage it too. Like the rest of the industry, we embrace tools that make our work more efficient. Last week, I attended an Executive Search conference focused entirely on how search firms are using AI. I expected game-changing discoveries. But my biggest takeaway was this: everyone in our industry, from the largest firms to the smallest boutiques, is still figuring it out. But I’m also very clear on what AI can’t do. It can’t replace connection. Efficiency is extremely helpful, but it’s not the same as empathy or intuition. It can’t replace that spark when you really understand someone and know exactly where they’ll thrive. At Soul Equity, we’re a boutique search firm that prides ourselves on hands-on, face-to-face service for both our clients and candidates. We invest the time to truly get to know the people we work with by vetting, advising, and strategizing alongside them. I named my company Soul Equity for a reason. People — our clients, our candidates, and my team — are the heart and soul of everything we do. It’s the personal touch, the relationships, and the trust we build that allow us to consistently exceed expectations. That’s what sets us apart, and that’s why our clients get the best candidates, and our candidates find the best opportunities. AI will never replace the power of relationships. Why the “Interests” section of a resume might be the most important one you’re overlooking… I can’t tell you how many interviews I’ve seen where the very best conversation starter came from the bottom of the resume- the Interests section. Hiring managers want to connect with you as a person, not just as a bullet-point list of skills. And sometimes, the thing that makes you stand out isn’t just your deal sheet - it’s your passions, quirks, or hobbies. I LOVE reading that you’ve climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, cooked your way through Ina Garten’s cookbooks, binged every episode of Seinfeld, and that you’re an amateur stand-up comic! These little highlights of your personality make you shine and stand out, beyond your experience and deal sheet. They humanize you, and they make me smile! The point is: those little details make you memorable. They give an interviewer a way to break the ice, and sometimes, they create instant common ground that leads to stronger connections. So don’t skip the Interests section. Own it, have fun with it, and show a little bit of who you are outside of the office. This might be controversial... but here’s the reality: your LinkedIn photo matters. Presentation, polish, and perception carry real weight, and your profile pic is part of your professional brand, like it or not. After reviewing your resume, the very next step most hiring managers will take is to look you up on LinkedIn. Before they read a word of your profile, they’ll see your photo, and it leaves an impression. In a relationship-driven industry like Private Equity, where executive presence and client-facing polish are non-negotiable, your first impression absolutely matters. Some quick but important tips: ✔️ Use a high-resolution, professional-looking photo. Your iPhone is fine, as long as the pic is crisp and clear. ✔️ Make sure it’s current and reflects where you are now professionally. If you're a year out of school, skip the cap and gown. ✔️ Choose an image that aligns with the job you want, and if that’s private equity, aim for professional and approachable. ✔️ Dress in line with the industry standard (business formal or business casual). ✔️ Skip obvious filters.
