The SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond
About us
The SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people. We focus our legal, advocacy, and public education efforts on four major areas representing some of the most significant challenges facing the South and beyond: protecting voting rights and civic engagement; eradicating poverty in our Southern communities; dismantling white nationalism and protecting democracy; and decriminalizing and decarcerating Black and Brown people.

Bias-motivated violence is different from other crimes: It targets people for who they are, and the impact ripples through entire communities. Yet, the data we rely on to track such violence is incomplete. Many victims don’t report, and many agencies don’t track consistently. In addition to accurate reporting, training and trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve are essential. Without a full picture, we can’t create real solutions. The rise in hate crimes in recent years underscores a painful truth: What we don’t measure, we can’t address. And when funding for prevention is cut, the consequences are immediate and devastating for vulnerable communities. Our latest feature examines the reality of hate crime underreporting, highlights the work required to close the gap, and explores the importance of prevention programs. We invite you to read the full piece and join the effort this #HateCrimesAwarenessMonth. https://lnkd.in/gj32DvGr

The SPLC is grateful to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation for hosting another powerful Annual Legislative Conference. We’re proud to have sponsored sessions that created space for rich, timely and deeply impactful conversations — from defending voting rights to uplifting Black and Brown leadership and institutions. It was an honor to stand alongside so many committed leaders working to protect and advance our communities. Special thanks to the SPLC team for powerfully representing us on panels throughout the day. We mourn with the families and communities of Demartravion “Trey” Reed and Cory Zukatis in Mississippi. The imagery of these two deaths immediately evokes the collective consciousness of those deeply aware of Mississippi’s troubled past. These tragedies remind us that inequity continues to endanger lives. The SPLC calls for investigations that are thorough, transparent and accountable so communities can begin to find peace and justice. https://lnkd.in/giRmDRdY

The SPLC is thankful for the opportunity to join Chris Joyner of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Will Carless of USA TODAY and Orion Rummler of The 19th for NLGJA's 2025 Convention discussion on how we can all responsibly cover hate and extremism. Hate and extremism aren’t just running rampant in the dark corners of the internet; the spread of hard-right rhetoric has moved extremists from the political fringes into positions of power.

Rather than take meaningful steps to stabilize our economy and ensure people can meet their basic needs, President Trump has slashed the social safety net and is attempting to paint the first Black woman to serve on the Fed's Board of Governors as a villain. A Hatewatch review of the Department of Homeland Security's social media posts and web content found that the federal agency utilizes white nationalist and anti-immigrant images and slogans in recruitment materials. In some cases, the images and language appear to come directly from antisemitic and neo-Nazi publications and a white Christian nationalist website. The Ville, St. Louis, was a beacon of Black progress. Educators, doctors and artists thrived alongside Sumner High School and Homer G. Phillips Hospital. But redlining, predatory lending and highway construction tore through the neighborhood, displacing families and erasing a cultural hub. The Ville’s legacy reminds us of Black resilience. #BlackBusinessMonth #EconomicJustice
