A new wave of antiquities collectors has brought heightened legal risks associated with provenance, title, and due diligence. In a recent The New York Times article, Leila Amineddoleh, Chair of our #ArtLaw Group, discusses the importance of protective purchase agreements, advising buyers to build in time for legal vetting and return protections and work with legal counsel who understands the nuances of the art market and the intricacies of international art and heritage law. Taking a quick break on this holiday weekend, I joined Fox News (from my attic) to discuss the latest motion filed on behalf of the alleged killer of United Healthcare CEO Bryan Thompson. The Defense is seeking dismissal of charges that could lead to the death penalty along with suppression of key evidence in the case based on Constitutional challenges. The Defendant has strong legal representation, which is a good thing no matter what you think of the underlying charges. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Victims of art theft are often left without recourse because they simply cannot locate their stolen property. However, sometimes luck has other plans. In her latest #ArtLaw blog, Leila Amineddoleh examines the remarkable journey of Portrait of a Lady, a Nazi-looted painting discovered in an Argentine real estate listing and what the artwork’s provenance, possession, and restitution reveal about legal and ethical complexities surrounding stolen art.
