Why did the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and its largest local affiliate decide to partner with three leading AI companies to train elementary and secondary school teachers to use AI in their work? How might the AFT try to address AI through collective bargaining? And how has the partnership been received by local leaders, union members, and others? These questions and more are explored in a recent conversation between Seth Harris, Burnes Center for Social Change Senior Fellow; Randi Weingarten, president of the AFT; and Roy E. Bahat, head of Bloomberg Beta. Listen to the conversation here: https://lnkd.in/dhnEiZiW

What started with 8 strangers who later became friends launching The Longest Table Community as an effort to restore hope in New York City after the pandemic, under Maryam Banikarim 🗽🚕 ❤️'s leadership, grew into a nationwide movement, bringing hundreds together for shared meals in neighborhoods, schools, and local businesses, all seated at one long, unifying table. For this episode of Leading Voices, we caught up with Maryam at the inaugural Trust in Practice Summit this year, hosted by the Aspen Institute Alliance for Social Trust, where she calls for a new leadership muscle: to lead with grace and trust, let go of control, and empower others to step in. Leading Voices is an ongoing series from the Aspen Institute where you’ll hear directly from leaders about what it takes to lead and how they got to where they are.

So how do we make manufacturing jobs good jobs? Her suggestions for policymakers include: 📌 Supporting the advising infrastructure that small and medium-sized manufacturers need. 📌 Developing performance standards for local organizations that include job quality goals to ensure that the investment in manufacturing jobs yields the returns we expect for our economy and society. For four years, Weave: The Social Fabric Project at the Aspen Institute tested a new model of local partnerships in medium cities, rural areas, and mixed rural-suburban-urban settings to support local trust builders. The program gave neighbors resources, tools, trainings, and connections to strengthen the bonds in their communities and bring people together to address shared needs. As a result of this work, the Lily Endowment has granted Weave $22 million to continue its work with 75 communities across the nation. Weave is now searching for partners to host the first cohort of 25 communities. The ideal host organization will have: 📌 Strong ties across all parts of the community and a commitment to building connections and trust for everyone 📌 A current operating budget of at least $1 million and enough staff capacity to create events, share weaving stories, and distribute Awards for the next four years 📌 The legal ability to disburse grants to people and community groups Selected organizations will: 📌 Receive $225,000 in startup funding over two years to launch the program 📌 Award 20+ microgrants each year ($2,500–$5,000 each) to local weavers 📌 Access training, tools, templates, and ongoing support 📌 Celebrate local stories of connection and trust-building 📌 Convene gatherings and build a community of weavers Join a national cohort of Community Hosts to learn and grow together. Applications are being accepted until November 2, 2025. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dZ3fVmnv

Scams aren't just a nuisance. They cost American households $158 billion every year, threatening both household financial well-being and U.S. national security. Convened by The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program, the National Task Force on Fraud and Scam Prevention has developed a report that proposes a coordinated national strategy to stop the scam epidemic. A recent conversation brought together leaders from industry, government, law enforcement, and advocacy organizations to discuss the report recommendations and share key priorities that enhance national security, protect consumers, and build resilience against scammers. 🎶 What does it mean to lead with creativity and reflection? Teddy Abrams, Grammy Award–winning conductor and Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra, believes that stepping back, pausing, and contemplating can reveal deeper truths, both in music and in leadership. Under his direction, the orchestra has launched bold initiatives like the Creators Corps composers’ residency, the community-building "In Harmony tour" across Kentucky, and even the Louisville Orchestra Rap School, all designed to bring people together through the power of music. Teddy joins us for this episode of Leading Voices at this year’s Aspen Ideas Festival to share how art can inspire impact far beyond the stage. Leading Voices is an ongoing series from the Aspen Institute where you’ll hear directly from leaders about what it takes to lead and how they got to where they are.
