Confession time: I used to think longer interviews meant better hires. 🔴 Spoiler alert: I was wrong. So, so wrong. Busy contractors, you're bleeding time (and money) on hiring nonsense. You're likely wasting time and here's how to fix it: ➡️ Spending 30+ minutes interviewing someone who clearly didn't read the job description? ✅ Solution: Add a simple pre-screen question or keyword requirement based on the job description to filter them out before the interview. ➡️ Asking generic questions like "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" (Spoiler: Working for someone who asks better questions). ✅ Solution: Ask targeted, role-specific questions about their skills, experience, or problem-solving. You could even ask for tangible proof of skill or passion, like photos of past projects they're proud of. ➡️ Not having knockout questions to screen people out fast? ✅ Solution: Define your absolute non-negotiables (e.g., license, specific tool proficiency, availability) and ask about them in the very first interaction. ➡️ Ignoring massive red flags on a resume because "maybe they're different in person" (Narrator: They weren't). ✅ Solution: Trust the red flags. Address them directly before scheduling an interview, or simply screen them out if they're deal-breakers. ➡️ Having zero structured interview process, just "winging it"? ✅ Solution: Create a simple, consistent interview guide with key questions and maybe even a basic scorecard to compare candidates fairly. Your time is your most valuable asset. Stop letting unqualified candidates steal it by implementing these simple fixes. (Someone had to say it. Don't @ me... unless you agree 😉)
