The GOP’s proposed $150 billion immigration enforcement package is an inexcusable waste of federal resources. More than that, it represents an unprecedented effort to commodify human rights. This package, which is included in the GOP “Reconciliation Bill”: ❌ introduces new prohibitive fees for normalizing migration status ❌ forces migrants to pay into a system that is actively criminalizing them ❌ allocates billions in funds for indefinite detention and deportation ❌ includes funding for deportation to El Salvador ❌ does not address rampant human rights violations in our immigration system The American people cannot afford for this bill to pass. Take action by calling your congress members TODAY!

The murder of Sara Millerey is an atrocious crime that reflects a growing trend in hate crimes against the trans community in Colombia and across the Americas. #JusticeforSara involves more than simply arresting those responsible for her death. We demand that Colombian officials strengthen protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, and work to combat anti-trans rhetoric, which lays the foundation for these unspeakable acts of violence. 🚨The IRS will now share tax data of undocumented immigrants with ICE. 🔍A new agreement between the IRS and DHS allows ICE to access tax records of individuals with deportation orders or under criminal investigation. 🗣Critics argue this move violates privacy laws and could deter undocumented immigrants from filing taxes, despite contributing billions annually. 💬What are your thoughts on this development? #IRS #Immigration #UndocumentedImmigrants #DataSharing #PrivacyRights

The Latin America Working Group reposted this
José Rubén Zamora– does his name sound familiar to you? For the past three years, Zamora has been at the center of a trial against his work as a journalist and anti-corruption defender in Guatemala. In July 2022, he was detained and given a 6-year sentence on bogus money laundering charges. His only crime: exposing cases of corruption involving former president Alejandro Giammattei and his cronies. Zamora was incarcerated for more than 800 days, where he was held in unsanitary conditions and put in solitary confinement, leading him to suffer psychological consequences consistent with torture. Most recently, he was put on house arrest. But this past Monday, March 10th, a judge ordered his return to preventative prison. Zamora's persecution is unfounded, and solely based on his work to uncover government and private sector corruption. National and international NGOs have widely denounced his persecution, and the United Nations found his arrest to be “arbitrary” and in violation of international law. We demand #JusticeForZamora ✊ Guatemalans deserve justice and accountability. Read more and learn what you can do to help ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gKcHkNcA
