So great to see the Philadelphia Gay Men's Chorus featured on NBC ahead of their big shows this weekend! Soap box time: I think organizations like the PGMC are absolutely critical today because they prove that building a more diverse, inclusive world is FUN. For example, there are many people who ignore or reject the hard data showing DEI improves company performance — but some of them are actually open to emotional appeals. They don't want to be lectured at, they want to feel something. These are the people who leave shows like PGMC's with a deeper understanding of why these communities matter, and they take that into other areas of their lives. The Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus stands in solidarity with our siblings at Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC whose involvement in the Kennedy Center’s PRIDE concert was canceled without explanation. This is a clear and strategic act of erasure of LGBTQ+ arts and history. We will NOT be silenced. We stand with GMCW and all our GALA siblings against this LGBTQ+ erasure. And we will continue to sing to inspire support, advocacy, and acceptance within our community and beyond. Congratulations to the National Football League (NFL) LIX Super Bowl Champions, our very own Philadelphia Eagles! Go Birds! PGMC challenged fellow GALA Chorus Heartland Men's Chorus in a musical rematch from 2 years ago. Since our Birds prevailed, we await an online post of their rendition of Elton John's #PhiladelphaFreedom for us. As part of this challenge, PGMC began a campaign to collect much needed gloves for the LGBTQIA youth served by Philadelphia's Attic Youth Center. PGMC has about 150 pairs of gloves to be donated to the center and hope that our sibling choruses consider a donation as well. Donations to PGMC go far beyond supporting the arts. PGMC was founded back in 1981, when our founder Gerald Davis and three other members toured the Philadelphia Gayborhood at Christmas time and sang carols.  The early 80s was an uncertain time for our community as the AIDs Epidemic was just coming to light.  PGMC wanted to bring a sense of joy for the holidays to the community who were going through a difficult and tragic time.   Our mission today is to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and LGBTQ+ awareness through exceptional musical performance, while fostering support, advocacy, and acceptance in the Greater Philadelphia area and beyond.    Marcus Saitschenko of the PGMC once said, regarding why we sing:   “I think it’s important for people to know that the Gay Choral Movement wasn’t started so we could sing “I Am What I Am” in four-part harmony.  Our friends were dying.  We had no political power.  They all wanted us dead.    We sang to give strength to our friends.  To demand medicine, research, any kind of humanitarian aid.  We change the world with our voices. “   Today PGMC along with nearly 200 LGBTQ+ choruses in North America and the world, sing  to continue to advocate for our community and instill a sense of inclusion, acceptance and belonging.    As 2024 comes to a close and we enter into a new year filled with uncertainty for our community, PGMC would like to begin by wishing you and yours a very happy and safe holiday.   We also ask that you consider making an end of year donation, to help support PGMC in their mission.   Please go to: https://lnkd.in/eD463aTJ   Your support is greatly appreciated.
