Sending our thanks to our panelists — Yodit Mesfin Johnson, Executive in Residence, NEW (Nonprofit Enterprise at Work) & Independent Consultant; and Suma Karaman Rosen, Executive Director of InsideOut Literary Arts — for sharing their experiences and insights with our funding peers at this week's Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) conference. We were honored to have Yodit and Suma speak during the “Supporting Nonprofit Partner Rest, Well-Being & Liberation” CMF session we co-hosted with Monica Marie Jones, MSW. We are especially grateful to wellness coach Monica Marie Jones for co-hosting this session. Monica supports nonprofit leaders, including our own McGregor Fund Miller Fellows, with brilliance and compassion, and we are grateful to her for facilitating this conversation, alongside our own Vanessa Samuelson, McGregor Fund VP of Learning & Insight. Two years ago, our Miller Fellows asked us to amplify, as an urgent matter of racial equity and justice, our advocacy for rest for nonprofit leaders. We pledge to continue our response to this call. https://lnkd.in/eM2wWTyd

Our mission is to relieve the misfortunes and promote the well being of humankind.
About us
Grounded in the lived examples of Tracy and Katherine McGregor, the McGregor Fund works to support and strengthen a safety net of essential resources and opportunities for vulnerable members of our community, particularly those experiencing sustained and concentrated poverty. We believe all human beings deserve access to these essential resources and opportunities, without which a healthy, fulfilled life is impossible. People living in poverty differ only insomuch as they are unable to pay for them. Working within the tri-county region of Metropolitan Detroit, we optimize our investments of grants and staff time to strengthen the safety net of essential resources for people in need.

I’ll be in Kalamazoo on October 14th, at the 53rd Annual Council of Michigan Foundations Conference, joining my friend and colleague Suma Karaman Rosen, and co-costed by Monica Marie Jones, MSW and Vanessa Samuelson from McGregor Fund, for a nearly full session on Supporting Nonprofit Partner Rest, Well-Being & Liberation. In this session we will wrestle with the paradox of a sector that calls people to service while starving them of the very conditions they need to thrive. We will invite participants to examine how philanthropy can move beyond rhetoric to practices that honor the humanity of nonprofit partners. Together we'll interrogate what it means to disrupt cycles of depletion and create new ways of being in relationship that are rooted in our collective care, courage, and work for just outcomes. This is not a conversation about asking for permission to pause. It is about reimagining leadership itself. Leadership that does not measure worth by busyness, or require exhaustion in order to be effective. For us, Rest Is Justice. If we want whole, healthy communities, we need everyone--including those chosen to lead --whole and healthy. Besides, how can we expect creative, innovative, durable solutions to the issues our people face when everybody's burnt out?! Make it make sense! This is the heart of my forthcoming book, We Are the Ones. I am writing about leadership from the margins, drawing from the wisdom of bell hooks who reminds us that the 'margins' were never just sites of exclusion, but also sites of radical imagination. She and our other good ancestors and elders remind us to lead through our lineage, with our community, and through fierce love. They remind us that another way is not only possible, it is necessary. Especially now. In this session, and in my work, I am inviting us to turn away from models that drain us and toward practices that free us, and our people who are pushed down by oppressive systems. The question is not whether we are tired. The question is whether we are willing to reclaim the kind of leadership that restores us, and makes our wellbeing a condition for leadership, not something we only get on vacations or sabbaticals. Y'all ready? We are the ones we have been waiting for. #WeAreTheOnes #LiberationLeadership #CMFConference #LeadershipFromTheMargins

My most recent assignment has been to support leaders in centering their rest, healing, and wellbeing. That divine call to action was confirmed when the team at The McGregor Fund Fund reached out to me to partner with them on the very important work they are doing with the Eugene Miller Fellowship where nonprofit leaders are given the resources and support they need to take a sabbatical. We are excited to share our work and our lessons learned at this year’s Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) annual conference. Registration closes on October 1st. If you have already registered feel free to adjust your selection to join us for this meaningful and engaging session. From Dignity Restoration Project: 📌 Since 2009, 1 in 3 Detroit homes have undergone tax foreclosure. 📌 This is a higher rate than any other city since the Great Depression. 📌 Between 2009 and 2015, the city overvalued 55-85% of homes, disproportionately impacting Black homeowners. 📌 Despite this being a violation of the Michigan Constitution, affected residents have received no compensation. We join in celebrating Angela Reyes! Last week, the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation paid tribute, at its annual Dream Makers Gala, to its founder’s 53 years of loving service to Southwest Detroit. Both McGregor Fund President Kate Levin Markel and Jonathan Pulley, Director of Grant Development for the Fund, were in attendance. From Kate: “It’s hard to overstate the importance, reach, and legacy of Angie’s life giving and lifesaving work. She is one of the most loving, courageous, insightful, humble, badass, nurturing, innovative, straight talking, generous leaders I’ve ever known or watched. Thank you Angie, for your gifts of blood, sweat, tears, sustenance, hope, love, laughter, and inspiration over these many years.” Watch DHDC's beautiful tribute video: https://lnkd.in/eQat88B7 Read more about Angie, the DHDC origin story, and the organization’s trauma-informed, community and indigenous leadership staffing model: https://lnkd.in/eaFxb4aB

Celebrating Angela Reyes, Founder and Executive Director, Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation and McGregor Fund Miller Fellow: "Angie Reyes changed my life. Her founding program — the GRACE Program — was my escape plan from the neighborhood. It gave me entry into the corporate world...and I eventually realized that my passion and my life really needed to be here in the neighborhood. Coming back to work directly for Angie was where I really found my purpose...Angie was part of that footprint for me. I am so honored to call her my mentor." - Tanya Saldivar-Ali, Co-Founder and Business Development Director AGI Construction Solutions / Detroit Future Ops
Tanya Saldivar-Ali shares how Angie Reyes profoundly shaped her life and inspired her path. Angie’s vision continues to guide and strengthen our community, and at this year’s Dream Makers Gala on September 26, we will honor her legacy through stories like Tanya’s. Join us for an unforgettable evening that celebrates leadership, impact, and the power of community. Secure your tickets today and be part of carrying Angie’s vision forward.
