Applauding the day-one drivers behind brands & the career curious! Sponsored by Mission Kitchen & Against Ordinary

About us

Closing the door on my startup opened the door to more opportunities than I could have imagined. I’m proud to be an Unfounder, helping startups grow from day one. I’ve been both founder and Unfounder and now I want to share the stories no one hears; applauding the day one drivers behind brands. You don’t have to start the brand to be the reason it made it. Forget founder fairy tales. We’re here for the Unfounders. Real talk from the people who took the leap (and what they ’d tell you before you do).

Most iced tea doesn’t taste like tea… That’s because many don’t use brewed tea 🤯 This weeks guest on The Unfounders is Ellie-Mae Healey, Head of Growth at Marna They make a range of no added sugar, lightly carbonated iced tea in mango, lemon and peach flavour. Brewed with real tea leaves - I can honestly say these are a cut above the rest, and they’re already making waves stocked in Whole Foods, Fortnum & Mason, Harrods, SoHo House and more I loved digging into Ellie’s background as the first employee after the founders Mauro Auzinger & Tristan Flint And reflecting on her time at PerfectTed - and all the lessons she learnt working with Shani Higgs and the rest of the team. Check it out now on Spotify & Apple - links below Also, as always thanks to my sponsors, the fantastic Mission Kitchen - THE place to take your brand from kitchen table to retail shelves And to Against Ordinary™ - one of the best marketing agencies to help level up your brand or smash your marketing campaign out the park Enjoy!

Today I've got not one, but two awesome people from the team at Hip Pop on The Unfounders Podcast! 🙌 Harry Ford - Grocery Lead and Eve Rodway - Brand Manager I'm a huge fan of the brand and products Emma Thackray, Kenny Goodman and the rest of the team are building in the functional drinks space with Hip Pop. And it was great to peel back the hood to hear from two of the team Eve and Harry brought two very different perspectives and backgrounds to the tables, but it's evident they both love what they do and it sounds like they're building one hell of a team up in Manchester too! Co-founder Allora 🍋

Those of you who know me well know how much I bloody love a podcast. So I can’t tell you how much I’ve loved listening to the one and only Jacob Wood talk all things lemons and life with Mitch Lee ❄️🫐 on The Unfounders podcast this week. I spent more than a decade as an ‘Unfounder’, helping grow three founder led businesses in BEAR, Soulfresh and TRIP, before setting out on my own journey with Jamie Mancini and Allora (drinks). So I know better than most how valuable the early stage employees of a business are and how often they don’t get the credit or the spotlight. Our industry glamourises founders, but without people like Jacob Wood, Becky Wyndham and Jade Blanchette, who take a risk by joining a brand before it barely even exists, we’d be up the creek without a paddle. So give our man JW a listen (preferably with a spritz in hand of course) and when you’re finished, scroll back a couple of episodes and listen to another legendary Unfounder Katie Edmunds - two of the industry’s brightest lights and nicest humans ✨❤️

Everyone seems to have an opinion on BrewDog But everyone also knows who Brewdog are.... What happens when you’re the first marketing hire at a brand that goes on to shake up an entire craft beer industry? Well that's the story of Sarah Warman, who spent 12+ years at BrewDog Helping turn a scrappy start-up into a global household name In the latest episode of The Unfounders, Sarah shares her journey through the craft beer world, reflecting on: 🍻 How BrewDog’s marketing evolved from guerrilla stunts to structured campaigns 📣 Her favourite campaigns like VotePunk and Mash Tag that helped build an engaged community 💡 Lessons learned from both hits & misses (yes, even Pink IPA) 🤝 The power of collaboration, storytelling, & understanding your audience 🎯 Transitioning to a fractional CMO role, offering senior marketing expertise with flexibility I loved this chat - and especially this anecdote of an email exchange with James Watt As always thanks to my sponsors Mission Kitchen - THE place to take your brand from concept, to retail shelves (why not book a tour today?) What if missing a deadline is actually the best thing you can do? 👀 This is the first week I haven’t released an episode of The Unfounders And it feels like I’ve failed! For over a year, every single week I’ve: 🎙️ Recorded & produced an episode 🎞️ Cut together the trailers 🖼️ Designed thumbnails 📲 Shared on socials Until this week The truth? Very few people will notice 😅 (More will now because of this post) We put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect Anything less feels like we’ve let ourselves down One motto I live by is: "Did you give 100%?" And despite no episode, I can honestly say - I did Life gets in the way People reschedule Tech fails Family time, being present is SO important And I have no regrets for choosing that last week The Unfounders will be back each week (If all goes to plan) But if you haven’t heard every episode Now’s a great time to dive into the back catalogue There’s so much inspiration in each one Happy Monday! P.S. If you’re a regular listener, what’s been your favourite episode? P.P.S. Has anyone listened to all 55 yet?

Today's guest on The Unfounders is Bina Edwards UK Commercial Director at Holie's Holie's are on a mission to shake up the cereal aisle with their amazing healthy, low sugar, high protein granola, muesli, snack bars and more. They've already won a landmark court case against Lotus bakeries for their 'Sugar Score' campaign where they simply shared the nutritional information on pack to the masses in an engaging way But I loved hearing more of what it's like working in such an exciting start up Plus Bina has already got a cracking CV, with brands like Liquid Death, Red Bull - and one of the original UK startups Ugly Drinks (with Hugh Thomas / Joe Benn) I loved this clip about Bina's interview process - it shows the attitude you really need as an unfounder to progress in the startup space.
