Late-season storms can be just as destructive as those that form during peak hurricane season. October 2024 was a clear reminder, producing four named storms, three of which made landfall. While Hurricane Leslie remained over open waters, Milton intensified rapidly in 48 hours from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane, showing how quickly conditions can change. Hurricane Oscar’s slow movement over Cuba brought heavy rainfall that triggered landslides, cut off communities, and damaged transportation networks. Tropical Storm Nadine affected Belize, Guatemala, and several Mexican states, requiring coordinated response efforts across international borders. As we move through this year’s season, government agencies must prepare for storms that develop outside traditional peak months. Partner with Tidal Basin to strengthen your community’s disaster readiness and recovery. One year ago today, Hurricane Milton carved its path through Florida, leaving behind $34.3 billion in damages and testing every aspect of disaster response. What made Milton especially difficult was its timing, as it hit areas still recovering from Hurricane Helene just weeks earlier. Peaking at a Category 5 hurricane, Milton made landfall as a Category 3, bringing up to 10 feet of storm surge, more than 20 inches of rainfall, and 45 reported tornadoes. Tidal Basin worked to help communities recover from this devastating storm and remains committed to assisting in any future challenges during the 2025 hurricane season. #HurricaneMilton #DisasterResilience #HurricanePreparedness
