  • A recent Translational Vision Science & Technology study led by Richard F. Spaide, MD, describes a practical approach to estimating ocular blood velocity using speckle characteristics in OCT images acquired with the Topcon Maestro2 system. The work demonstrates that intravascular speckle structure in standard OCT images contains reproducible information related to blood velocity, enabling depth-resolved estimates without phase-based Doppler methods or complex computation. As Mary Durbin (VP of Clinical Science, Topcon Healthcare and co-author) noted: “This speckle-based OCT approach provides a non-invasive, depth-resolved method for estimating ocular blood velocity with minimal computational requirements.” This research aligns with Topcon’s broader efforts to move OCT beyond purely structural imaging toward functional assessment and, over time, initiatives such as oculomics and Healthcare from the Eye. While this study focuses on a specific methodological advance, it contributes foundational tools that may support those longer-term goals.
