Model Retirement: The Overlooked Security Risk Everyone talks about AI model deployment. Nobody talks about AI model retirement. That's a problem. Legacy models still processing live data, using outdated security frameworks, and consuming resources nobody is monitoring is a problem. The Reality: Model lifecycle management is security lifecycle management. But most organizations treat AI models like permanent infrastructure instead of applications that need regular retirement. Why This Matters: • Legacy models often lack current security controls and monitoring • Outdated models may not comply with evolving AI regulations • Resource consumption from unused models creates unnecessary attack surface • Data retention policies often don't account for model-specific data requirements Trilogyworks recommends: • Sunset Planning: Every model gets a retirement date • Data Inventory: Complete mapping of what data each model accesses and retains • Dependency Analysis: Understanding which systems and processes rely on each model • Secure Decommissioning: Proper data purging, access revocation, and audit documentation What We've Learned: Organizations that don't plan for model retirement end up with AI sprawl that's impossible to secure effectively. After three decades of watching technology lifecycles, this pattern is predictable. The question isn't whether you'll need to retire AI models. It's whether you'll do it securely.
