Congratulations to Professor Laura Kray of University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business! Her article “Now, Women Do Ask: A Call to Update Beliefs about the Gender Pay Gap” was named the most impactful article on social and alternative media in the 10-year history of Academy of Management Discoveries. Co-authored with Jessica Kennedy of Vanderbilt University and former Berkeley Haas postdoctoral researcher Margaret Lee, this research challenges the long-held myth that women don’t negotiate. Across multiple studies, the authors found that women now initiate salary negotiations as often as, and sometimes more than, men. Yet pay disparities persist. The study also shows how outdated beliefs can reduce support for pay equity policies and reinforce systemic bias. There’s a distinct energy when changemakers come together. As Faculty Director of the Berkeley Changemaker Program, Alex Budak describes it as a kind of magic in the room, with leaders from across industries connecting around purpose and possibility. Through this program, held December 8–10, Alex helps participants develop the mindset and skills to lead meaningful change through critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.
