Please join us in congratulating our patient, Sean White! He's doing great and recovering steadily after his fifth open-heart surgery with Dr. V. Mohan Reddy in June. A lifelong UCSF patient, Sean was born with Shone’s complex, a rare congenital heart condition, and had three life-saving surgeries at our hospital before the age of three. He returned for his fourth surgery in 2016 while still in high school, and this most recent procedure marks another milestone in his journey with us. Sean's mother, Joanne Hayes-White, was one of the first women in the San Francisco Fire Department and later became its first woman fire chief, serving 15 years before retiring in 2019. Today Sean is feeling great; taking walks, staying active and counting down the days until he’s back on the golf course! He returned to work and recently had a blast celebrating weddings with friends and family in Los Angeles and Buffalo!
Huge congratulations to our patient, Andrew Santos, recipient of this year’s Colin Powell Medal of Courage! Andrew took the stage at last night’s Concert for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals to receive his award. At age 17, Andrew came to our San Francisco hospital by helicopter after suffering an AVM rupture and brain aneurysm. He had brain surgery and spent the next three months at the hospital relearning how to walk and talk. Each year on his birthday and over the holidays, Andrew (now 25) asks friends and family to contribute to his UCSF game fund instead of giving him personal gifts, so he can donate games like UNO, Connect 4 and Jenga to our hospitalized patients! Congratulations, Andrew! ❤️
Thank you, Hyundai Hope on Wheels, for awarding $600,000 in Hyundai Young Investigator Grants to support childhood cancer research at our hospitals! Award recipients Dr. Benjamin Lerman and Dr. Ruyan Rahnama celebrated this important donation with our patients! Their research will help advance new treatments for pediatric cancers.

A huge thank you to the Oakland Roots Sports Club for bringing joy to kids at our Oakland hospital! Players Gagi Margvelashvili and Ali Elmasnaouy signed autographs, shared stickers and created unforgettable moments with our patients. They even helped celebrate a birthday and formed a band, “The Soccer Singers,” alongside facility dog Arnie and his person, music therapist Erica! ⚽

Fifty years ago, a child diagnosed with cancer had little chance of survival. Today, more than 85 percent survive, thanks to decades of research and clinical trials, including many led at UCSF. Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis visited UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals to proclaim September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and to recognize the research that has changed the future for kids and families. From new cell therapies for leukemia to promising clinical trials, UCSF scientists are moving discoveries out of the lab and into care.
