  • We are truly grateful to Tompkins Community Bank for hosting our students at their headquarters in Ithaca last week! We appreciate the time and resources you poured into exposing our students to the banking field. One student remarked: "This visit taught me a lot about banking. I learned that there are different people who control different aspects of financing, such as preventing fraud, managing credit scores, financial advisors, and more." Thank you for partnering in our career exploration initiatives and showing our students what innovative leadership is all about! #ToandThrough #CareerExploration

Yesterday, team members in Central New York welcomed an amazing group of young students from Rochester Prep Charter School, Uncommon Schools for a visit to Tompkins Headquarters in Ithaca! The students participated in a variety of financial education activities including financial literacy presentations from Tompkins team members, picking a stock and watching it change throughout the day, creating a personal budget, and asking questions about career opportunities in banking. A huge thank you to our team members involved in this event and to the students and teachers from Rochester Prep - Uncommon Schools for participating with such enthusiasm.

  • We're so proud of Ms. Mercado, a veteran teacher at Uncommon Ocean Hill Middle School, for being one of the finalists for the Julian Robertson Excellence in Teaching Award! The results (and the smiles) she produces for her students are just part of the reason for this prestigious recognition. Please help us celebrate her by adding your congratulations in the comments.

  • In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, students at Rochester Prep Jay Campus Elementary showed support by wearing 💚green, participating in a special community circle where they learned and practiced coping strategies, and completed mindfulness coloring activities in their classrooms. Big thank you to Social Worker Delilah Murray for organizing and leading the event.

  • How do you promote teacher growth at your schools? At Uncommon, we introduced the Master Teacher Institute to provide development opportunities that bring teachers together, support their classroom work, and provide better instruction for our students. Read more about it from Juliana Worrell, Chief of Schools K-8, and Laura Fern (Palma) Senior Director of K-12 Content Development, on our blog: https://lnkd.in/eS7rzYcJ

  • As we approach our Senior Signing Days — our hallmark celebration of our students' college acceptances — we also celebrate those who make it possible! We’re deeply grateful to the Charles Hayden Foundation, which supports our North Star high schoolers in Newark with direct initiatives to help them access and succeed in college, and to the The Clark Foundation, which supports all of our schools in NYC. Together, you're helping dreams take flight. 🎓✨

  • It’s National Charter School Week, and we’re celebrating the journey of every Uncommon student! At Uncommon Schools, we believe every student deserves a strong start and a strong finish to their educational journey. 📚✨ 🎉 In elementary school, we spark a love of learning with fast-paced, rigorous, and fun lessons. We teach values like kindness, respect, and hard work to nurture both hearts and minds. 🌍 In middle school, students deepen their critical thinking skills, discover who they are, and engage with the world around them. They learn to debate, reflect, and grow as thoughtful citizens. 🎓 In high school, every student works closely with a counselor to find the college that’s right for them. 96% of our graduates have earned admission to 4-year colleges since 1997. Students from Uncommon Schools graduate from college at 4x the rate of their lowest-income peers nationally. Our support doesn’t stop there: our alumni success coaches are with them through graduation and beyond. This week, we celebrate the promise of public charter schools and the potential of every student. 💙

  • Our North Star Academy Washington Park high school students had the unique opportunity to visit another high school and help their students get prom-ready—doing both hair and nails with skill, care, and professionalism. 💈💇🏾♀️💅🏽 It was an incredible moment of students supporting students with kindness, representing their school with pride, and engaging in a chance to grow AND give back through their skills and craft. 🪩 Happy Prom Season! 🪩
