We believe a college degree should be within reach for every young person in this nation. We start and manage outstanding urban public charter schools that close the opportunity gap and prepare students from economically disadvantaged communities to graduate from college.
Think about it… how many Black male teachers did you have in school? Nationwide, Black men make up less than 2% of educators, which means most students never have the chance to learn from one. At Uncommon, we employ 8.5x more Black male educators than the national average, and our annual Black Male Educator Summit celebrates these leaders and their impact in the classroom!
Three years ago, this Summit started with 70 attendees, and today that number doubled to 140! 💙 Jaz GrantDenarius FrazierQuinterrence Bell, Ed.D
Julie Jackson, Uncommon Schools' Co-CEO, started her teaching career at Teach For America (TFA) in Paterson, NJ. On her first day, Julie welcomed 33 students to the class and quickly realized there weren’t even enough seats for all her students.
"My first day at class was not as organized as it needed to be. I don't have enough desks, but I stay cheerful and excited for my first English class. What I quickly realized is that the students are far behind academically. So what I plan for them, they were not able to do, which led to some classroom management issues.” This would be one of many challenges she learned to overcome at TFA, helping her lead her students to academic success.
This year, TFA is celebrating its 35th anniversary and honoring alumni for their contributions to educational equity. Check out this video to see if you can spot Julie among those being honored.

Imagine your AP African American Studies teacher is a Black woman who also graduated from your high school. It doesn’t get more full circle than that!
Ms. Annor is an AP history teacher at Uncommon Washington Park High School, and moments like this show the power of representation and legacy. This Black History Month, we are continuing to highlight Black voices and stories across Uncommon Schools. Happy BHM!🤎
Samson is headed to Duke University this fall! 🎉 "I felt a boost of confidence...if you asked me freshman year, I never imagined I would be getting into a prestigious school." 🥹
Thanks to QuestBridge, Samson received this scholarship opportunity. Congratulations, Samson! Drop a 🎉 in the comments to celebrate!

Rochester charter schools have lost more than $2 million in state aid over the past two years, even as other NY cities saw increases. Uncommon Rochester Prep Board Chair Langston McFadden spoke with 13WHAM ABC about how this funding gap impacts public charter students from low-income communities.
Even with reduced funding, Rochester Prep continues to meet and exceed benchmarks in math and English, and 99% of seniors are accepted to four year colleges. Imagine what’s possible with equitable funding! Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/ee28DTFA
