While the war in Gaza sees a breakthrough, the streets still tell a different story— blocked by debris, weighed down by loss. 80% of buildings have been damaged or destroyed. 61 million tons of rubble have been created. Between February and August, a team of 5 United Nations Volunteers worked alongside UNDP Palestinian on the ground in Gaza joined by 61 Online Volunteers from 35 countries as part of debris management with a mission to clear rubble — each stone lifted, a step towards Gaza's recovery. Our Global #MultidimensionalPoverty Index 2025 with the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI), University of Oxford is out NOW. This new research finds that of 6.3 billion people in 109 countries, 1.1 billion are multidimensionally poor. Poverty is still our greatest global challenge, which is also a challenge compounded by the climate crisis. Of the 1.1 billion multidimensionally poor people, 887 million live in regions which are exposed to at least one of four climate hazards: high heat, drought, floods, and air pollution. Many poor people face overlapping climate hazards. 651 million live in regions exposed to two or more of these climate hazards, and 309 million in regions exposed to three or four climate hazards. As climate hazards continue to grow in frequency and intensity, countries which currently have higher multidimensional poverty levels will likely experience greater average temperature increases. It is vital to align poverty reduction efforts with climate action. In the face of the climate crisis, our commitment is clear: no one must be left behind.
