Beyond “Digital as Usual”: Rethinking How We Innovate I was delighted to be a panelist at the UN Global Pulse Partnerships & Networking Event – “Transforming Development: AI, Innovation & Partnerships for the SDGs” at the University of Helsinki. A warm thank you to Tapio Vahtola and Marketta Gland for the kind invitation, and to Timo Pätiälä (Hellon Group) for the expert moderation. It was a privilege to share the panel with Timo Harakka (Member of Parliament, Finland), Sasu Tarkoma (University of Helsinki), Kaisa Salakka (Illusian), and Kristine Alanko (Ministry of Transport and Communications) - each bringing deeply insightful perspectives from policy, research, business, and government. Our conversation underscored that the transformation we seek through AI and innovation must be ethical, human-centred, and sustainable. Technology alone is never the answer - it’s the values, intentions, and collaborations behind it that determine whether progress truly serves people and the planet. From the education perspective, I shared how, at UNICEF’s Global Learning Innovation Hub in Finland, we are rethinking how digital and AI can accelerate learning for every child - by embedding it meaningfully in systems that empower teachers, promote equity and inclusion, and are grounded in evidence. Despite vast investments in EdTech over the past 15 years, global learning outcomes have barely improved. We need to move beyond "digital as usual" toward smarter, more inclusive, and sustainable innovation that strengthens what we know already works in education. The event also featured inspiring remarks from Jouni Hirvonen (Vice Rector, University of Helsinki) and Tapio Vahtola (Head of Office, United Nations Global Pulse Europe), a keynote from Antti Vasara (Special Envoy for Technology, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland) and a message from Dr. Nina Smidt (CEO, Siemens Stiftung). Earlier my colleagues Carlos Ferrari and Olli Vallo led a workshop on organizational readiness for innovation, highlighting how teams can build the right culture and capabilities to turn ideas into impact. It was a reminder that meaningful innovation happens when we combine ethical foresight, human empathy, and scientific rigor - and when every sector works together to ensure that the promise of AI contributes to a fairer and more sustainable world. 🌍 #LearningInnovation #UNICEFLearningInnovationHub

What if running🏃♂️➡️ was more than wellness? What if it was, at its best, a way to come together as a community? That’s why our Uganda office is joining Joshua Cheptegei, the Ugandan Olympian and champion🏆, together with UNDP Uganda and other partners on November 1st to run in support of youth empowerment, climate change mitigation🌲, and the elimination of Gender-Based Violence, in Mbale City. 📺 Watch our very own Janet Ndagire for more details 👇 #Uganda🇺🇬 #3rdElgonHalfMarathon #JoshuaCheptegei #Climate #YouthEmpowerment #EliminatingGBV

From pilots to platforms ↔ and platforms to policies. At #UNGA80, Talea von Lupin (Portfolio Manager, United Nations Global Pulse) and Vilas Dhar (President, The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation) discussed how DISHA, an AI-powered platform for disaster response, is helping the United Nations use data to act faster, learn by doing, and scale what works. Developed by United Nations Global Pulse, DISHA is the UN Secretary-General’s innovation lab initiative that turns complex data into actionable insights through reliable, tested models. 🎥 Hear their insights below. #AIforGood #DataForGood #DigitalTransformation

🌍 Collaboration, context, and long-term thinking stood out this week at SIF2025’s “Scaling Together: FAO’s Evolving Role in Innovation for Impact.” It was an honor to join the panel moderated by Mohamed Manssouri together with Carina Pimenta, Loraine Ronchi, Brigid Letty, and Neela A. Saldanha, discussing how we shift from pilots to systemic impact across the UN and - importantly - beyond. The discussion was framed by insightful opening interventions from Vincent Martin and Isabel Guerrero, and brought to a thoughtful close by Corinna Hawkes — reminding us how far collaboration can take us when knowledge and action come together. Some takeaways that will stay with me: 🔹 We must forge deeper collaboration across UN agencies and other international organizations, governments, academia, private sector, and communities. 🔹 We need to move beyond short-term projects toward iterative, resilient, long-term solutions — recognising that scale isn’t one-size-fits-all, context matters deeply. 🔹 Scaling doesn’t happen by pushing alone — it happens by aligning incentives, trust, and adaptation to local realities. Thank you to FAO for organizing this dialogue and for taking bold steps toward a more coordinated, joint approach to scaling innovation. I look forward to continuing this work together. #SIF2025 #InnovationForImpact #ScalingImpact #Partnerships4SDGs #Collaboration #UNInnovation United Nations United Nations Global Pulse Delgermaa Chuluunbaatar Martina M.
