When the shelling began, 14-year-old Mykyta from Orikhiv, Ukraine was in geometry class at home. The lesson was online because fighting had reached the outskirts of his town. That morning, he received a phone call he would never forget. It was his mother. At first, all he could hear was noise. Then, finally, he made out one word: “Help.” Mykyta rushed to her workplace. What he saw changed everything. Things that no child should ever have to see. His mother, Natalia, was found in the rubble. She was rescued but lost her leg and now faces ongoing health challenges. Terrified by the violence, they fled their home. Mykyta is learning to cope with high blood pressure, stress and painful memories. “It’s impossible to forget everything that happened. It has affected my health and so far my condition isn't improving.” Today, the family lives in Zaporizhzhia. With vital medical care and mental health support, they are slowly rebuilding their lives together. In times of crisis, mental health support can be the lifeline children like Mykyta need to find hope and strength. It must be at the heart of every humanitarian response. #OnMyMind

When conflict broke out in Sudan, the dangers of violence, including sexual violence, against children and women grew. UNICEF and partners have opened the first women and girls’ centre in Kassala State where they can learn where to report sexual violence and how to protect themselves. “I have learnt how to protect myself and my children. I also know that if I hear of a rape case, I should take the survivor to hospital and report to the police immediately,” Maimuna, a mother of three, says. “When the earthquake struck at midnight, I was terrified. We ran out of the house just before it collapsed. We had nothing - no shelter, no food - until someone told my father that camps were being set up for families like ours,” recalls Khaled, 12, about the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan over a month ago. UNICEF and partners are supporting families like Khaled’s in camps for those displaced by the earthquake, especially for water, sanitation and hygiene, by installing gender-segregated emergency latrines, improving both hygiene and dignity for earthquake-affected families. Over 212,000 children are at risk of acute watery diarrhoea and other deadly waterborne diseases in earthquake-hit eastern Afghanistan. Over the past month, UNICEF and partners have scaled up efforts to deliver safe water, emergency toilets, hygiene supplies and health information.
