United Nations Foundation reposted this
One of the most important tasks of my term as President of the UN 🇺🇳 General Assembly will be to lead the process to select and appoint a new Secretary General of the United Nations - the person who will guide this unique international institution through the next years. The selection process comes at a pivotal moment for the UN. Our choice will send a powerful message about who we are as a United Nations, and whether we truly serve all the peoples of the world, of which half are women and girls. Because since it’s 80 years, the United Nations has never had a female Secretary General. Together with the President of the Security Council, Ambassador Michael Imran Kanu of Sierra Leone, today I initiated the first official step in this selection process by signing the Joint Letter on the procedures. As President of the General Assembly, I will ensure that the selection and appointment process is guided by General Assembly resolutions as well as by the principles of transparency and inclusivity. 📍LONDON On January 10, 1946, the United Nations General Assembly met for its first session. Four months after the end of World War II — in the spirit of hope and determination — delegates representing 51 nations gathered to preserve peace by working together. Eighty years later, reflect on that historic moment: bit.ly/4ssCHQP
