Advocacy. Empowerment. Independence.
About us
United Spinal Association is a national 501(c) (3) nonprofit membership organization dedicated to empowering people with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D), including veterans, to live successful and fulfilling lives. Directed by people with disabilities, United Spinal Association works to overcome the stigma of disability and remove physical barriers to inclusion for wheelchair users. We are united in our belief that business, people with disabilities and society all benefit from providing equal opportunity to pursue passions, employment, and recreational opportunities. Our goal is to actively support people with SCI/D through valuable programs and services that maximize independence and create opportunities to become leaders, advocates, and innovators. United Spinal transforms the lives of people with SCI/D by: 1) Advocating for enforcement and enhancement of disability rights, including access to healthcare, mobility equipment, public transportation, rehabilitation, community services and supports, and the built environment 2) Empowering our members, their loved ones, care providers and professionals with resources, one-on-one assistance, and peer support 3) Promoting independence through employment, assisting individuals with employment opportunities, and ensuring that wheelchair users have equal access to housing, shopping and recreational opportunities 4)Promoting civic participation and self-advocacy

Big thanks to my friend Carl Evans and his wife Evy for inviting me to the Build America Summit in DC during the Congressional Black Caucus. 🙏 This means a lot—not just to me, but to the communities I represent: people with disabilities, the formerly incarcerated, and those experiencing homelessness. These are voices too often left out, yet they deserve to be heard. If you want to make a difference, you must be at the table. I’m grateful to have had that seat this week. 💙

"While on my journey to medical school, I became well acquainted with our medical system through the patient lens. This truly motivated me to pursue medicine, knowing I could combine personal experience with clinical knowledge to provide patient care," says RJ, a third-year medical student and wheelchair user.

On Wednesday, September 24th, at 12:00PM ET, you can tune in LIVE for the next Meet an Advocate Live Stream that will be featuring Natalie Castrogiovanni. Natalie is the Founder and President of Motion Project Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of those with spinal cord injuries and paralysis. After her own injury in 2004, she became a leading disability advocate, serving as Regional Champion with the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and leading the Buffalo Chapter of United Spinal Association. In 2021, she fulfilled her dream by opening The Natalie Barnhard Center for Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation and Recovery in Buffalo, NY—the first of its kind in Western New York. That same year, Natalie was selected as United Spinal Association’s Finn Bullers Advocate of the Year. As a best-selling author, award-winning advocate, and keynote speaker, Natalie continues to prove that life with a disability can still be purposeful, fulfilling, and thriving.
