The fresh scent of pine drifted through the rows of headstones at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen on Wednesday as utility companies teamed up with tree crews to improve the landscape of this sacred ground that serves as a final resting place for the nation’s heroes. The work was performed as part of a national maintenance and beautification effort known as Saluting Branches, which began in 2015 and has become the largest one-day volunteer event in the tree care industry, dedicated to honoring veterans by enhancing veteran-designated areas across the U.S., including in New Hampshire.

Assisting an unresponsive or unconscious coworker atop a utility pole is a rare occurrence, but potentially life-saving pole-top rescue skills are vital in the electrical industry. That’s why lineworkers from Unitil recently participated in a comprehensive pole-top rescue training exercise to gain the tools and confidence to act decisively in an emergency. Pole-top rescue simulation drills are offered annually as part of our robust safety strategy, but this year featured more in-depth training with assistance from Powerline Training Consultants, a company that provides training and consulting services for the utility industry with hands-on experiences.

Bone-dry conditions fueled a stubborn brush fire that burned approximately 13 acres of woodlands in Exeter, NH, last fall, but the potential for wildfires on a much larger scale has led to research by a graduate student who recently studied the risk that climate change, specifically wildfires, poses to our infrastructure.

Durham firefighters have been participating in the highly specialized training sessions with members of Unitil’s gas division during their shifts in recent weeks to gain a deeper understanding of the utility’s natural gas system and how to respond to an emergency. These critical safety training sessions are offered to fire departments throughout our service territories annually with additional outreach throughout the year.

With the first-ever National Emergency Management Awareness Month to be held in August, Unitil is recognizing the vital role that strong partnerships with local emergency management officials play when preparing for the unexpected. Spearheaded by the International Association of Emergency Managers, the inaugural National Emergency Management Awareness Month aims to highlight the importance of emergency management and the contributions of those who work to keep their communities safe during weather-related events and other emergencies.
