Ruth A. Lawrence, MD, an internationally recognized pioneer in breastfeeding medicine and toxicology and a longtime University pediatrician, has died at the age of 101. Over seven decades at URMC, she advanced breastfeeding from the fringes of medicine to an essential part of clinical care and scholarship, authoring the landmark Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession and founding the Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Study Center. The Transplant Institute at URMC recently performed its 3,000th kidney transplant, giving a local man in his 50s a second chance at life. “Performing 3,000 kidney transplants is a tremendous accomplishment for our team, which leads life-saving care in upstate New York,” said Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro, MD, chief of the Transplant Institute. The program also performs liver, pancreas, heart, and bone marrow transplants. Thanks to organ donors, the team completes about 100 adult and pediatric transplants annually, with last year’s record 120 surgeries highlighting their dedication. Advances such as minimally invasive surgery and kidney “swaps” through the National Kidney Exchange have improved outcomes and access for patients. “We’ve built a dynamic, skilled team working together to make these successes possible,” said Randeep Kashyap, MD, MPH, surgical director. Thanks to all who helped make the "STEM Goes Red" Learning Event happen! 100 local high school students joined us to further understand medical and STEM fields and how they relate to heart health. They learned hands-only CPR, practiced the blood-typing process, and built heart models. This learning experience is especially important at a time when the nation faces a shortage of healthcare professionals. We're thrilled to pass on the knowledge and excitement about these careers! ❤️

Wilmot Warrior Weekend is special because it's more than a weekend. Much of the fulfillment from the event is actually in the comradery of our training rides and group fundraising leading up to the weekend. Each meet-up and training mile is a welcome reminder of why we participate. We are excited to have completed an important renovation to our Adult Psychiatry unit! Our newly updated space is an investment into our patients and staff. It enhances safety and a calming environment for our care teams to continue to provide support, safety, dignity, and recovery. Thank you to our teams who deliver compassionate, expert care every day. "We are so excited to be working in such a beautiful space! The renovations have created a warm, brighter, and more welcoming space for staff and patients. The renovation brought many new safety features including barricade and ligature safe doors, weighted furniture, and staff safety duress alarms. The renovations truly focused on patient-centered care. As a team, we are so thankful to have this new space and care for our patients in the best way!" said Nurse Manager Lucy Baxendell, BSN, RN, PMH-BC.

One of the essential parts to our patient care are Radiologic Technologists, informally known as Rad Techs. Terrance and Liz help provide clarity to their day-to-day duties and how to get started in a career where the impact is immediate and lasting. Terrance: "A typical day as a rad tech consists of imaging inpatients and ED (emergency department) patients, and bringing portable X-rays to patients on floors for the majority of the hospital, including the cancer center, pediatric hospital, and psych patients. I also go to the OR (operating room) for surgery cases and assist the surgeons by using a C-arm, which can take still X-ray images or a series of live images via fluoroscopy, which can produce a real-time X-ray movie." Liz: "Becoming a rad tech has been such a great decision for me. It has opened up so many doors and opportunities for a bright future for me and my family. The Imaging Sciences Department is so large and dispersed over all areas of the hospital and off-site locations. There are so many opportunities to grow and train in different imaging departments as well. The U of R supported me through X-ray school with tuition assistance and by allowing me to work hours that wouldn’t interfere with classes and clinicals. I am thankful that the U of R gives me flexibility to be a full-time radiologic technologist as well as a full-time mom."
