United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) reposted this
📢 For the first time, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) has been impacted by a federal government shutdown. As the primary contractor for the OPTN, UNOS has been directed to pause much of its critical work, including some committee work that affects organ allocation and patient care. While UNOS continues to operate the organ matching system and patient services line, and to address critical patient-safety matters, this disruption -- combined with the looming expiration of UNOS’ contract extension on Dec. 29 -- creates an uncertain and untenable environment for the U.S. organ donation and transplant system. The shutdown, combined with the fact that UNOS is owed more than $10 million in delayed reimbursements for OPTN work already performed since September 2024, forced UNOS to furlough 90+ employees this week. We urge lawmakers to act swiftly to restore funding and protect patient safety and the integrity of the system by fully resuming OPTN operations. Lives depend on it. October is National Liver Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of liver health and the life-saving impact of organ donation. Currently, more than 9,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a liver transplant. Did you know the liver is the only organ capable of regenerating itself? That’s what makes living liver donation possible. Within just four months, the donated portion of the liver can fully regrow and resume normal function. Register your decision to be a donor, and learn more about living and deceased liver donation here: https://lnkd.in/eCK2gXeS 🩵 💚
