About us

The Department of Defense activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense, to plan for and conduct special operations.

Congratulations to 2nd Ranger Battalion for competing and winning the Drone Crucible Competition! The Drone Crucible Competition took place from September 19 to 24, 2025, in Central Florida. The competition consisted of close-quarters breaching/room-clearing, precision strikes on moving ground convoys and moving aerial targets, long-range engagement of critical assets, and coordinated multi-target long-range strikes conducted while countering enemy drone defenses, with competitors from the Joint Force and the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence. This win came on the heels of the Regiment’s Robotics Lethality Course, reflecting both the fundamentals instilled in its program of instruction and the cross-pollination of expertise across the battalions. #rltw

“I want the U.S. to win. I want us to dominate.” For GEN Bryan Fenton, building the most lethal SOF force on the planet isn’t about ego — it’s about obligation. In this SOFcast episode, the USSOCOM Commander explains why advocacy, resourcing, and presence in every mission set isn’t just important — it’s essential to our national strength. “If SOF isn’t in the mix — with the authorities, the people, and the resources — the nation isn’t as good as it could be.” 🎧 Full conversation with GEN Fenton and CSM Shorter on SOFcast S6E12. #SOFcast #Leadership #StrategicAdvocacy #NationalDefense #USSOCOM #SpecialOperations

“We don’t want to grow a third arm patting ourselves on the back. But we do owe the American people an understanding of what we’re doing in their name.” GEN Bryan Fenton, Commander of USSOCOM, reflects on the balance between discretion and transparency — and how SOF continues to earn trust without compromising mission integrity. From shaping policy to shaping perception, today’s quiet professional knows that silence isn’t always strategic — especially when it comes to serving a nation that deeply supports its warriors. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation with GEN Fenton and CSM Shorter on SOFcast S6E12. #SOFcast #USSOCOM #StrategicCommunication #Leadership #QuietProfessionals #MilitaryTrust

U.S. Army Special Operations Command I protect the nation. Without fear. Without fail. Without equal. Those words, etched in glass along the side of the Maj. Gen. Robert A. McClure building, define the mission of USASOC. For more than four years, Lt. Gen Jonathan Braga has led that mission, and the 35,000 plus ARSOF soldiers and their families as they serve the nation here at home, and across the globe. On Sept. 24, 2025, soldiers, friends and families from across Army Special Operations, said farewell to Braga, as he relinquished command to the acting USASOC commander, Brig. Gen. Kirk Brinker. As Gen. Bryan P. Fenton said as he presided over the ceremony: It’s all about winning here at USASOC. Today and tomorrow. Thank you, sir. #SinePari

“We’ve always known what we bring to the fight — now, others do too.” GEN Bryan Fenton calls this moment in SOF history a renaissance — not because Special Operations has changed, but because the national team and global partners are recognizing SOF’s full value like never before. In this SOFcast episode, he and CSM Shane Shorter talk trust, transformation, and why the force is being called upon more than ever to lead from the front. 🎧Listen to this strategic leadership conversation now. #SOFcast #Leadership #Transformation #USSOCOM #SpecialOperations #NationalSecurity #ServantLeadership
