"They were alone, far from home, and without the resources to change their situation... That’s when Sarah stepped in — not just as a nurse, but as a human being with extraordinary empathy. Without being asked and without hesitation, Sarah called her husband at home and asked him to bring their own pack-and-play to the hospital. She did this quietly, humbly, and without seeking recognition — simply because it was the right thing to do." #UVAHealth's DAISY Foundation is a nursing-specific award created to honor extraordinary care. We're proud to honor Sarah Bast, BSN, RN, CPEN, who was assigned to care for a pediatric patient who had been transferred from several hours away. The child arrived with their mother and infant sibling with no local support system, no transportation, and no plan for how the mother would be able to stay with both of her children once the patient was admitted. 🌼 The colleague who nominated Sarah praised her effort to "[give] a scared mother the ability to stay with both of her children in a safe and supportive environment."

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was interfering with David's sleep and quality of life. Gregg Eure, MD, had a solution: aquablation, a technique that uses a high-pressure water jet to remove prostate tissue getting in the way of urine flow. David is now back to sleeping well and enjoying time with his wife and grandchildren. Watch his story and learn more about aquablation: https://bit.ly/4oqghgm

I'm headed to Washington, D.C. today. And while there will be lots of activities to enjoy as part of the American Academy of Nursing's 2025 Health Policy Conference, the new Academy Fellows induction ceremony, which takes place Saturday, is a highlight. Three of my extraordinary colleagues will be inducted this weekend, including: -Windy Alonso, department chair of nursing research and an NIH-funded nurse scientist with expertise in heart failure and rural health who leads the HEART Camp Connect research team; -Kimberly Elgin, DNP, APRN, ACNS-BC, PCCN, CMSRN, FCNS, an award-winning #CNS, UVA Health advanced practice provider, and part-time faculty member and mentor; -and Emma Mitchell, an National Institutes of Health-funded #nursescientist and associate professor who studies novel ways to detect, treat, and eliminate #cervicalcancer in low-resource settings. As we celebrate this trio at a collaborative reception with three other Virginia nursing schools - JMU School of Nursing, VCU School of Nursing, and Old Dominion University School of Nursing, led by Deans Melody Eaton, Patricia Kinser, and Rene Love PhD, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN - we'll also be applauding our UVA School of Nursing alumni inductees Andrea Knopp (PhD '10), Eunhee Park (MSN '13, PhD '15), Bethany Robertson (BSN '89), Amy M. Sawyer, Ph.D., R.N. (BSN '02), and Sheila Sullivan PhD RN EBP-C (MSN '96). I'm excited to see everyone, and am just so proud of you ALL. 💙 🧡 Congratulations, #2025FAANs!

New research reveals that a missing molecule called pleiotrophin may be behind faulty brain circuits in Down syndrome — and restoring it could improve brain function, even in adults. The findings have been published in the scientific journal Cell Reports. 📘 https://bit.ly/4hcCgF0

Starting Oct. 21, we'll see patients from 2-6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month at the Greene County Senior Center. The mobile care unit provides general checkups, chronic disease management, care for minor illnesses and injuries, and other healthcare for adults and kids. “We have heard from many residents across Greene County asking for primary care services closer to where they live,” said Novella W Thompson, MBA, MA, FACHE, administrator for UVA Health’s Population Health Department. “Our mobile care unit can create access, make it more convenient for patients to get the care they need, and reduce their travel times.” More details: https://bit.ly/4hdJJDS

Last Monday, we celebrated a key milestone in the construction of the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology’s 350,000-square-foot facility with a “topping-out” ceremony as the final steel beam was placed. Once complete, the cutting-edge biomedical research, development and manufacturing facility will become the nerve center for biotechnology research, development, and manufacturing at UVA. It will bring together high-tech research facilities and state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities under one roof. 🔬 Learn more about the ceremony at https://bit.ly/476SATm

UVA Health researchers are developing a promising approach to detecting patients at risk of interstitial lung disease (ILD), an increasingly common condition that is a leading reason for lung transplant. The UVA scientists have already discovered biomarkers that can predict the survival chances of patients with ILD. But the researchers, led by John S. Kim, MD, believe these types of biomarkers can be used for far more: the scientists are aiming to determine if they can identify people who have not yet developed ILD but will go on to do so. They also hope to map out the molecular hallmarks of early and late-stage ILD to better understand the condition and how it develops. The approach could accelerate the development of new and better treatments with more tolerable side effects. 🔬 Learn more at https://bit.ly/3KGicyM
