At Versantus, we help organisations create innovative and sustainable digital products that build measurably better relationships with their users. We're an Oxford digital agency, working with ambitious organisations who typically have a digital offering or technology at their business’ core; whether it’s AI integration, translating complex data into a visually-appealing medium, or scaling software on a national or global level. We partner with our clients to make intelligent technology effective and accessible for their end users. Our specialisms include Drupal, WordPress and Oxford Mosaic development, as well as comprehensive in-house design, UX, marketing and branding. No project is too big or technical for us, but the proof is in the pudding.     Want to know the biggest reason your Google Ads suck (and waste money)? After 10 years managing and optimising Google Ads for national and international clients, I’ve seen a lot of wasted ad spend. Your budget should be protected at all costs and used wisely to squeeze out as much value as possible. Here are the biggest issues I see time and time again: ⸻ 1️⃣ 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 Trying to target too many audiences or objectives in one campaign is a big mistake. Granularity is key. It helps Google understand your targeting better, makes your ads more relevant, and gives you cleaner data so you can actually see what’s working and what’s not. ⸻ 2️⃣ 𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 I often see people either broad matching everything (which opens the floodgates for irrelevant clicks) or going too far the other way with only exact match (which strangles reach). The right balance is a small, focused keyword pool using a mix of broad, phrase, and exact match. Then regularly check your Search Terms Report to discover new converting keywords and add negatives for anything irrelevant. ⸻ 3️⃣ 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬. If you’re not doing this properly, you’re wasting money on traffic that will never convert. It’s one of the simplest ways to improve your ROI. ⸻ 4️⃣ 𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 Incorrect setup in Google Tag Manager or marking low-value actions as primary conversions can completely skew your data. If your tracking is off, your decisions will be too. ⸻ 5️⃣ 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Google Ads needs regular attention. You should be checking in on your data, identifying trends, and steering spend where it actually delivers results. ⸻ At the end of the day, Google Ads is a powerful platform. The issue isn’t Google itself, it’s how we understand and use it. When you take the time to truly understand the tools, the targeting, and the data, that’s when your campaigns start performing the way they should. Protect your budget. Stay curious. And keep learning how to get the most out of every click.
