🎂 the W3C Patent Policy was adopted 22 years ago today 🎉 https://lnkd.in/eiMzjY5m "Royalty-free" is meant to boost adoption, implementation, and ultimately growth of the web as a platform. W3C standards may be used by anyone at no cost; if they were not free, developers would ignore them.

Today, the Verifiable Credentials 2.0 family of specifications is now a W3C Recommendation, making expression, exchange, and verification of digital credentials easier and more secure. Credentials are a part of our daily lives; driver's licenses are used to assert that we are capable of operating a motor vehicle, university degrees can be used to assert our level of education, government-issued passports enable us to travel between countries. The family of Verifiable Credentials W3C Recommendations provides a mechanism to express digital credentials in a way that is cryptographically secure, privacy respecting, and machine-verifiable, as well as provides an extension mechanism so that specific applications (identity credentials, university credentials, etc.) can use their own terminology. Congratulations and many thanks for all their work to the Group, their Chair: Brent Zundel, Tradeverifyd; Editors: Manu Sporny, Digital Bazaar, Inc.; Ted Thibodeau Jr, OpenLink Software; Ivan Herman, W3C; Gabe Cohen, Block; Michael Jones, Invited Expert; Greg Bernstein, Invited Expert; Mike Prorock, mesur.io; Mahmoud A., Mavennet; and Authors: Dave Longley, Digital Bazaar, Inc., David W Chadwick, Invited Expert; Markus Sabadello, Danube Tech; Drummond Reed, Evernym/Avast; Orie Steele Transmute; and Christopher Allen, Blockchain Commons #VerifableCredentials #DigitalIdentity #DataIntegrity #WebStandards Read more at: https://lnkd.in/e42Pah_C

On 30 April 1993, CERN's Directors Walter Hoogland and Helmut Weber, declared that the three components of Web software (the basic line-mode client, the basic server and the library of common code) that Tim Berners-Lee had first proposed in 1989, were to be put in the Public Domain. We are grateful to CERN and to Tim for this world changing decision which has enabled the W3C community to create open, accessible, international web standards which make the web work, for everyone. #anniversary #WebAnniversary #WorldWideWeb https://lnkd.in/eXUY-Gzh

The W3C Advisory Board has updated the Group Note of Vision for W3C and now proposes advancing it to a W3C Statement. The Vision for W3C articulates the values that underpin W3C’s mission, what W3C is, what it does and why that matters, and the principles by which it operates and makes decisions. Many thanks to editors: Chris Wilson, Tantek Çelik and Vision Task Force Chair Max Gendler and contributors including: David Singer, Michael Champion, Tzviya Siegman, and Avneesh Singh. W3C’s Vision for the Web includes that: The Web is for all humanity. The Web is designed for the good of all people. The Web must be safe to use. There is one interoperable world-wide Web. The fundamental function of W3C is to provide an open forum where diverse voices from around the world and from different organizations and industries work together to evolve the web by building consensus on voluntary global standards for Web technologies. https://lnkd.in/ecaV8ypQ https://lnkd.in/ecaV8ypQ

The OpenWallet Foundation, along with 30+ other organizations across the open source, standards development and regulatory ecosystems, is co-convening the two-day Global Digital Collaboration, an in-person event in Geneva, Switzerland on July 1-2, 2025. As contributors to the OWF Community, we want to make you aware of the event, the goals and objectives of the gathering, and invite you to participate and suggest topics (more info coming soon). The Global Digital Collaboration is a public private partnership to gather key stakeholders—including tech companies, standards organizations, and government representatives—to explore use cases and share best practices that enhance global interoperability. This unique collaboration aims to foster greater alignment in technical, policy, and regulatory frameworks across various domains, ultimately building trust in the global digital economy. If you and your colleagues who wish to attend, please click this link to register as a guest of the OpenWallet Foundation (co-organizer of the GDC): https://hubs.la/Q03fwcmR0 FYI: - This event is free and open to all - There is a limited number of tickets allocated to each co-organizer - Tickets are on a "first-come, first-served" basis If you have any questions, feel free to email [email protected] . Day 1 (July 1) of the GDC will highlight collaborations of governments and the private sector around the world, working on the challenges and opportunities regarding digital trust, identity, credentials and wallets in the morning. In the afternoon the community will gather to see real-world examples of use cases and implementations addressing these ecosystems. Day 2 (July 2) will be even more interactive, with stakeholders, co-conveners and working groups meeting, collaborating and presenting on specific topics relevant to their communities. All throughout, there will be structured and unstructured time for networking, breakout sessions and discussions. The agenda is still being set, but we also want your input. For the Day 2 breakout sessions, we are currently planning the agenda for the OpenWallet Foundation room. If you would like to present or have an idea for a session, send an email to [email protected] with the subject, “GDC OWF Room proposal” and let us know what you would like to present or topics you would like to see discussed. OWF Staff will review these proposals and get back to you. We would like to thank all co-organizers of the Global Digital Collaboration, the sponsors who are making this event happen, the Swiss Government which is hosting this event and the CICG Geneva Switzerland which will host us on these two days. The OpenWallet Foundation is incredibly excited to participate in this event and we hope you will join us. - OWF Team
